NY Islanders Host Division Rival NJ Devils
A Metro division matchup between the Islanders and Devils is set for Friday night. It’s their first meeting of the season. Last year the Islanders led the series with a 2-1-0 record over the Devils, but New Jersey finished the season with a better overall record, and the Devils are expected to once again be a top team in the Metro. During the preseason, New Jersey beat New York twice, winning 6-5 in their first matchup and 3-0 in the second. But as we all know, the preseason doesn’t count. The Islanders are 2-0 (4 pts), making them the only undefeated team in the Metro. The Devils are 1-1-1 (3 pts), and after winning their season opener, have lost back-to-back games.
The Islanders may be undefeated, but they’ve only played two games. In those two games, the Islanders have scored 4 goals and allowed 2. The Jersey Devils have 10 goals in three games. The Devils defense has struggled with 11 goals against, but the Islanders clearly aren’t the type of team that’s going to light-up the scoreboard. In a side-by-side comparison, the Devils have 27 player points, while the Islanders have just 11 player points. New Jersey’s Jack Hughes (2 goals) and Jesper Bratt (3 goals) have more combined goals than the entire Islanders roster, and the Devils blistering offense will outpace the Islanders defense. On Friday, New Jersey will hand New York their first loss of the season.
