While Illinois comes into this game with a 7-2 record and winners of five games in a row, there may be no team playing much better than the Arizona Wildcats right now. Under the tutelage of first-year head coach Tommy Lloyd, the Number 11 ranked Cats are off to an 8-0 start to the season. Their offense is relentless – with four players averaging double-figure and they lead the country in scoring with 91.6 points per game. Arizona is also one of the better defensive teams in the country, ranking Number 1 in the entire nation in Opponent Field Goal Percentage and Defending the Two-Pointer.
Having said all of that, we think the Fighting Illini are a little underrated right now. They battled a ton of injuries to key players early in the season, but since they have gotten healthy they have reeled off the five wins in a row and averaged 84.2 points per game in the process against some quality competition. We think their overall stats for the season are a bit skewed as this is a much different and much healthier team than what was on the floor in mid-November.
You also can not underestimate the tremendous home court advantage the Illini has each time they take this floor. Since the start of the 2019 season, Illinois is 31-5 at home and has won those games by an average of 16 points per game. Over the course of those 36 games, the Illini have been home dogs just once and they won that game outright.
