OK, let’s get to our Cotton Bowl betting tips.

The first of two College Football Playoff Semifinals Games today pits defending champion Alabama against upstart Cincinnati. The Tide qualified for the playoffs and earned the Number 1 seed by upsetting rival Georgia in the SEC Title Game, while the Bearcats are the first non-power 5 team to ever advance to the Final Four and they are also the lone team in the nation with a perfect 13-0 record.

When we look at all of the match-ups for this game, what sticks out the most is the fact that the defenses will have major advantages over the offenses.

The Alabama offense, led by Heisman Trophy winning QB Bryce Young, managed to dominate the best defense in the country in that SEC Championship Game by throwing all over the Georgia defensive secondary as 421 of the team’s 461 total yards in the game came via the air. But the passing yards are simply not going to come as easy for the Tide today as they’ll be without their best wide receiver in John Metchie and will be facing a talented Bearcats secondary loaded with NFL talent and ranked in the Top 5 in the nation in passing yards allowed per game and per pass as well as opposing QB completion percentage, so look for Nick Saban to have a totally different game plan here today and to concentrate on the ground game.

As for the Cincinnati offense, this will be, by far, the most talented defense it has seen all season after competing in the AAC all season. The Bearcats have depended on a consistent running game to bail them out when needed and the yards will be hard to come by today against a Bama defense that has managed to shut down opposing running games all season in the SEC so they’ll be daring Cinci QB Desmond Ritter to beat them all day long.

So, when we look at this Alabama vs Cincinnati spread, we think the over/under has been posted too high. Alabama has gone under the total in the last 5 College Football Playoff Semifinal games as Saban likes to get out to a big lead and then sit on it with a heavy does of running the ball while the Bearcats have gone under the total in 24 of their last 29 games when listed as the underdog. So, for our Cotton Bowl Best Bet, let’s play under the total of 57.5.
