The Win-Deprived Pelicans Go Against Lebron James | Lakers vs Pelicans | OSB
Los Angeles Laker at New Orleans Pelicans
By Sam Batz
The Los Angeles Lakers make their way south to The Big Easy on Saturday, Feb. 4th to play the New Orleans Pelicans. The Lakers are ending a five game road trip in New Orleans, while the Pelicans return home after a three game road trip where they went 0-3. Both the Laker and Pelicans are in the bottom-half of the Western Conference standings, but are separated by just one game. The Pelicans are desperate for a win, while the Lakers are riding high after winning two straight.
After a promising start to the season, the Pelicans have fallen to the 10th spot in the West with a 26-27 record. They are below .500 for the first time this season, and are ten a half games behind the Conference leading Nuggets. Inexplicably, the Pelicans have lost 10 straight games. In January, they went a disgraceful 3-13, struggling to win on the road (2-8) and at home (1-5). It’s been a hard downfall to watch, as what was once a promising season, has fallen to shambles. The West is still a close race however, and the Pelicans have a chance to turn things around, but now face a Lakers team who are in no mood to lose any more games.
The Los Angeles Lakers are currently the 12th seed in the West with a 25-28 record. They are 6-4 in their last 10 games and are riding the coattails of Lebron James as he seeks to break the NBA’s all-time scoring record. The 38-year old James will undoubtedly break the record before the end of the season, but the question is when? He is 62 points away from tying Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s incredible record, and is currently averaging 30.1 points per game. If he continues at that rate, we will have a new all-time scoring champion in the next 2 to 3 Lakers games. In fact, it’s possible Lebron breaks the scoring record against the Milwaukee Bucks on Feb. 9th; a poetic end to Kareem’s run as scoring champ, as the Bucks were the ones to draft him in 1969. Nevertheless, winning games has always been the most important thing to Lebron James, and he will come ready to play against the Pelicans.

Lakers vs. New Orleans Team(s) All-Time Series
The Los Angeles Lakers have gone up against the various iterations of New Orleans NBA teams, from the Hornets to the Pelicans, 68 times during the regular season. New Orleans is a fairly young team and their series with the Lakers began in 2002. Since then, the Lakers lead with 42 wins, while New Orleans trails by 16 games with 26 wins. The Laker and Pelicans played back in November, and ended in an overtime thriller. The Lakers won the game 120-117, but it was a back-and-forth contest the entire game. Their next meeting on Saturday should be another tightly contested matchup.
Prediction
I would take the Lakers over the Pelicans in this one. It should be a close contest, but due to the form New Orleans is currently in, I have zero confidence in the Pelicans. They are averaging a measly 103.9 points over their last 10 games and have a horrendous point differential of -11.2. One could argue that the Pelicans are due for a win after losing 10 straight, but don’t fall for the hot-hand fallacy, or I guess cold-hand fallacy in this case. Without Zion Williamson, the Pelicans just can’t compete. Thankfully, Brandon Ingram is back in the lineup, however he hasn’t had as big of an impact as what was anticipated.
The Lakers are playing some of the best basketball we’ve seen out of them this year, and will want to end their five game road trip on a positive note. Los Angeles has eight players who are averaging 10+ points per game, and with Lebron James playing some of the best basketball of his career, the Lakers have the potential to beat anyone in the league. The Pelicans will lose their eleventh straight game, and the Lakers will end their road trip with a victory.
Prediction: Los Angeles Lakers Moneyline and the Over.
