Matchup: Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Phoenix Suns

The Phoenix Suns will host the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday in a highly anticipated cross conference classic. The Suns are 7th in the West and can’t afford to lose with the standings as tight as they are. Phoenix is just 1-game back from the 6th place Pelicans, and with a little help, the Suns could earn a top-6 finish and an automatic playoff berth. Unfortunately the Suns face the Cleveland Cavaliers, the 3rd best team in the East. The Cavs aren’t safe though, as there are only three and a half games separating 3rd from 7th in the East. Cleveland is in a bit of a slump as well, losing 2 of their last 3, including a 29-point loss to the Denver Nuggets on Sunday.

Cavaliers vs. Suns Matchup History

This Wednesday marks the 121st regular season meetings between the Phoenix Suns and Cleveland Cavaliers. The Suns have a big lead over the Cavs, posting a 70-50 record in the series. Their first matchup was in 1970 and their last matchup was on March 11th, 2024. The Suns beat the Cavs 117-111 on the road, and now Phoenix has a chance to sweep the Cavs for the 3rd time in 4 seasons. Historically Cleveland has struggled mightily on the road against the Suns, posting a 17-43 (28.3%) record as visitors to Phoenix. The Cavs went 1-3 in their last 4 visits, giving the Suns the historic edge.

Cavaliers vs. Suns Game Predictions

The Cavs could be without their best player, so I’m going with the Phoenix Suns. Donovan Mitchell, the Cavaliers All-Star point guard, has been ruled out for Cleveland’s game against the Jazz the night before, so monitor Mitchell’s status heading into Phoenix. If he remains sidelined, definitely go with the Suns. Mitchell averages 26.8 points per game, and is far and away Cleveland’s best offensive weapon. Without him the Cavs are 11-13 on the year, but went 2-6 in their last 8 games without Donovan Mitchell.

The Suns continue to struggle with consistency, but they’ll be glad to be back home after a 5-game road trip. Phoenix has a 62.2% win-rate at home, and a 70.9% win-rate as home favorites. While the Cavs are likely to be without their top-man, all three of the Suns best players (Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal) are healthy and ready to go. The Durant-Booker-Beal combo is generating 72.5 points per game for Phoenix, and the Suns will run the tired Cavs out of the gym. Cleveland is coming off a game the night before, and in back-to-backs Cleveland is 5-8, so with no rest and a short handed lineup, the Cavs will have a tough time beating the Phoenix Suns.

In summary, here are my picks for the Cavaliers vs. Suns Wednesday night matchup:

  • Moneyline Pick: Phoenix Suns (-245)

If you take the Suns Moneyline (-245): You risk $245 to win $100, for a total payout of $345, if the Suns win straight up.

  • ATS Pick: Phoenix Suns (-6)

If you take the Suns to Cover the -6 Spread (-110): You risk $110 to win $100, for a total payout of $210, if the Suns win the game by at least 6 points.

  • O/U Pick: Under (225.5)

If you take the Under on 225.5 total points (-110): You risk $110 to win $100, for a total payout of $210, if the Cavs and Suns combine for less than 226 points.
