Matchup: Miami Heat vs. Philadelphia 76ers

The NBA Play-In Tournament is an exciting contest and a precursor to the thrilling nature of the postseason. 8 teams make the play-in, 4 from each conference, and compete for the final two spots (7th & 8th seed) in the playoffs. Two teams vying for those spots are the Miami Heat and the Philadelphia 76ers, and this Wednesday the two Eastern Conference rivals will go head-to-head in a bid to claim the 7th seed in the East. The Sixers are the higher seed so they have home court advantage, and with reigning NBA MVP Joel Embiid back on the floor, Philly is the unquestionable favorite over Miami. The Heat will need to play a perfect game in order to beat the red-hot Sixers, but because of Miami’s recent postseason history, the Heat could be the team to take for those looking to bet on an underdog.

Heat vs. 76ers Head-to-Head History

  • Regular & Post Season Games: 154 (1989-2024)
  • All-time Series: Heat: 80 wins; 76ers: 74 wins
  • Season Series: Tied 2-2

Wednesday’s play-in game will mark the 155th all-time meeting between the Heat and the Sixers. The series began 35 years ago in 1989. It’s always been a close contest between these two, with Miami leading the all-time series by just 6 games (80-74). This season finished in a 2-2 tie, but the ultimate game changer Joel Embiid was only present for one of those games, and of course the Sixers won.

Heat vs. 76ers Best Player Props

Jimmy Butler; Over 23.5 points (-105)

Jimmy Butler played a huge role in Miami’s postseason success last season, and the Heat know they don’t have a chance if Butler doesn’t play well. Miami will look to get Jimmy the ball as often as possible, and with point guard Terry Rozier likely out, Butler will be Miami’s best offensive weapon by far. Butler averaged 20.0 points per game against the Sixers this season, but playoff Jimmy is a formidable opponent, and I’m expecting a huge game from Miami’s scoring leader.

Bam Adebayo; Over 0.5 Threes (+130)

It may sound ridiculous, but I’m betting on Bam Adebayo to hit at least one three-point shot against the Sixers. Bam is not a three-point shooter, but this season he attempted more threes than the past 4 years combined. Bam went 15-42 (35.7%) from the arc this season, and is 100% from long range against the Sixers. The 76ers won’t bother guarding Bam that far out, and I’m banking on the big man drilling one from deep in retaliation.

Heat vs. 76ers Prediction

Last season Miami made it all the way to the NBA Finals as an 8th seed, but their journey started with a loss in the same play-in game they find themselves in now. History tends to repeat itself, and Miami will once again fall short of securing the 7th seed in the East. Take the Philadelphia 76ers to beat the Heat in the play-in, thanks in part to the return of Joel Embiid. I know I’m harping on the fact that Embiid is back, but it’s because the Sixers are a completely different team with their 7-foot, 280 lbs Center on the floor. During the regular season, Philly went 31-8 (79.5%) with Embiid, and 16-27 (37.2%) without him, and the fact that he’s healthy and back to scoring 30+ points per game is enough reason for me to take the Sixers.

Heat vs. 76ers predictions:

  • Moneyline Pick: Philadelphia 76ers (-205)

If you take the Pelicans Moneyline (-155): You risk $155 to win $100, for a total payout of $255, if the Pelicans win straight up.

  • ATS Pick: Philadelphia 76ers (-5.5)

If you take the Pelicans to Cover the -3.5 Spread (-110): You risk $110 to win $100, for a total payout of $210, if the Pelicans win the game by 4 points or more.

  • O/U Pick: Over (208)

If you take the Under on 229 total points (-110): You risk $110 to win $100, for a total payout of $210, if the Heat and Sixers combine for less than 229 points.
