Can Panthers Dethrone Lightning?
Tonight, in BB&T Center in Sunrise, FL, home of the Florida Panthers, we will have an epic Game 1 of the battle for Florida. We all knew that this epic second round clash was possible, and sure enough we got it. This is going to be a rematch of last year’s first round Stanley Cup playoffs’s series, a series that the Lightning dominated, winning it 4-2. As the two time defending champions, the Lightning enter this series with the stranglehold not only on the NHL but also completely on Florida, but these are two completely different teams than those that met up last season.
The Panthers enter into this game as favorites and with good reason. They were the best team throughout the entire regular season, and had 122 points, the most in the entire NHL. Throughout the season, they ranked first in goals scored per game with 4.11, first in shots per game at 37.34, and 5th in power play percentage at 24.4. They had the most wins in the league, least losses, and best goal differential. While the Lightning do have playoff and championship experience on their side, they simply will not be able to handle these Panthers in Game 1. Both these teams surprisingly struggled a bit more than expected in their first round matchups, but the Panthers will enter knowing that their time is now, and with the game plan to prove it. Star leftwing Carter Verhaeghe was the best player for the Panthers in round one, scoring a combined 7 points in their last two must win games. Look for the lightning to be a bit sluggish out of the gate after a grueling 7 games series against the Maple Leafs.
For our expert Tampa Bay Lightning versus Florida Panthers prediction, take the Florida Panthers.
