Matchup: Phoenix Suns vs. Boston Celtics

The Phoenix Suns will face the Boston Celtics this Thursday on national TV. There are just 17 games left for both the Suns and the Celtics. Boston is safe atop the Eastern Conference standings, posting a 51-14 record (78.5%), nine and a half games ahead of 2nd place. The Suns on the other hand are right on the cusp of either an automatic playoff bid, or going through the play-in tournament. Right now Phoenix is 6th in the West, but the Suns could easily drop outside the top-six, especially if they lose on Thursday. Per usual, Boston is favored, meaning Phoenix will need to overcome some tough odds in order to pull-off the upset.

Suns vs. Celtics History

This Thursday will mark the 143rd all-time matchup between the Suns and Celtics. Phoenix and Boston have played 136 regular season games and 6 postseason games. The Celtics lead the series 76-60 over the Suns, however, over the past 5 consecutive seasons, Boston and Phoenix split the series 1-1. In their first matchup of this season, the Celtics beat the Suns 117-107, which means if the pattern of splitting the series continues, Thursday’s matchup will go to Phoenix. Unfortunately the Suns don’t have a great record versus the Celtics on the road, as Phoenix is 24-42 (36.4%) in TD Garden.

Suns vs. Celtics Game Predictions

Phoenix will give Boston a good game, but I’m going with the Celtics to win it. Boston has only lost 3 games at home all season (29-3), while the Suns went 2-3 in their last 5 road games. Phoenix has an All-Star lineup, but that in no way guarantees a successful season, just ask the 2020 Brooklyn Nets. According to NBA Advanced stats, The Celtics have the No. 1 ranked offense and the No. 2 ranked defense, while the Suns have the No. 10 ranked offense and the No. 13 ranked defense, making Boston the undisputed favorites against Phoenix.

The Celtics will be short handed against Phoenix, as Kristaps Porzingis has been ruled out for Thursday’s game with a hamstring injury. Porzingis is averaging 20.4 points and 7.0 rebounds per game, and while the 7’ 2” center will be sorely missed, the Celtics are 16-3 without Porzingis on the floor. Boston’s Jaylen Brown could also miss Thursday’s game, which would be another unfortunate loss, but wait, the Celtics are 6-0 without Brown this season. Boston is too well rounded to be bothered by injuries, and while the absence of Porzingis and Brown gives the Suns a ray of hope, taking Boston at home is always a safe bet.

In summary, here are my picks for the Suns vs. Celtics Thursday night matchup:

  • Moneyline Pick: Boston Celtics (-185)

If you take the Celtics Moneyline (-185): You risk $185 to win $100, for a total payout of $285, if the Celtics win straight up.

  • ATS Pick: Phoenix Suns (+4.5)

If you take the Suns to Cover the +4.5 Spread (-110): You risk $110 to win $100, for a total payout of $210, if the Suns win the game, or lose by less than 5 points.

  • O/U Pick: Over (231)

If you take the Over on 231 total points (-110): You risk $110 to win $100, for a total payout of $210, if the Suns and Celtics combine for more than 231 points.
