PADRES-MARINERS: PITCHERS MOVING IN RIGHT DIRECTION
The Seattle Mariners may have discovered a new star on the mound, and that’s giving them some encouragement, although they are stuck in fourth place in the American League West. The San Diego Padres are seeing a bit of resurgence out of one of their pitchers, who has experienced some previous success in the big leagues. These two will get together on Tuesday night in baseball betting action at Petco Park in San Diego, with a 10:10 PM ET start. BetAnySports customers have the opportunity to place wagers on this game while it is in progress through the facilities of Live Betting Extra.
The Mariners are currently holding a record of 34-42, which places them 9.5 games behind the Houston Astros. The Padres, one of the great disappointments after spending so much money in the off-season, are the third-place team in the National League West, with a 37-40 record, although they are only 5.5 games behind the lead. Since there is still a lot of time left, a team with the Padres’ collection of talent is obviously a candidate to make a move.
The starting pitchers for Tuesday night: for Seattle, it is southpaw Mike Montgomery, who has compiled eight 2-2 record with a 2.04 ERA in five starts. San Diego goes with Ian Kennedy, who is 4-6 with a 5.09 ERA.
In the baseball odds that have been posted on this game by the people at BetAnySports, the Padres are the favorites at home:
San Diego Padres (Kennedy) -120
Seattle Mariners (Montgomery) +110
Over 7 runs -125
Under 7 runs +105
Montgomery has been a big surprise for the Mariners, and it is not as if he was a phenom who rocketed his way into the major leagues. Yes, it was a first-round draft choice, but he has spent the last three years in AAA ball. When he got called up to the big leagues, he certainly made the most of it. The only effort that has not been stellar thus far came against the Giants two starts ago, when he allowed four runs in 7 1/3 innings. In that game he struck out just one batter, but then he came back with a complete game shutout against the Kansas City Royals, where he registered 10 K’s. In 35 innings, Montgomery has allowed only one homer.
BetAnySports patrons know Kennedy quite well. He had a 21-4 record in 2011, finishing fourth in the voting for the Cy Young Award in the National League, while he was a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Since then his record has been 39-41, although he experienced some success last season with an offensively-challenged Padres team, striking out 207 batters in 201 innings and posting a 3.63 ERA, while winning 13 games. He got off to a very slow start this season, getting roughed up early, but he has been coming on strong. In fact, Kennedy has allowed just three earned runs in 19 innings over his last three starts. So he is starting to “feel it” again.
But he needs to do a better job than he did against the Mariners when he faced them on May 12, as he was yanked with two outs in the fifth inning, but not until he had given up five runs and allowed 11 hitters to reach base safely. In that game he labored, throwing 106 pitches.
