las vegas aces vs phoenix mercury

The WNBA’s in-season competition, known as the Commissioner’s Cup, continues on Wednesday, June 21st with a Western Conference battle between the Las Vegas Aces and the Phoenix Mercury (3:30 PM EST, NBA TV). The Aces are 5-0 in The Cup, while the Mercury have not fared as well, posting a 1-4 Cup record. This year marks the third annual WNBA Commissioner’s Cup, an in-season competition where players compete for a prize pool and an additional pool of money for charitable and civic organizations. The Cup begins at the start of the regular season and continues throughout the first half of the season. Las Vegas is the reigning champion of the Commissioner’s Cup, and with an undefeated Cup record, the Aces are making a strong case to repeat as Champions.

The Las Vegas Aces (10-1; 5-0)

The Aces are 10-1 in regular season play, and 5-0 in the Commissioner’s Cup. Vegas is dominating the league in their encore season after winning the WNBA title in 2022. They have just one loss, average the most points of any team (91.9), and have scored 90+ points in 9 out of their 11 games. The Aces are led by the No. 1 overall pick from 2019, Jackie Young, who is averaging 20.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game.

A’ja Wilson, the No. 1 overall pick from 2018, is also having an excellent season, averaging close to a double-double with 18.5 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. Additionally, Kelsey Plum and Chelsea Gray are averaging double-digit scoring figures, and WNBA legend Candace Parker, the No. 1 overall pick from 2008, rounds off the Vegas’ starting lineup. Clearly the Aces are stacked, making them the favorites to not only win on Wednesday, but to win the whole Commissioner’s Cup.

The Phoenix Mercury (2-8; 1-4)

The Phoenix Mercury are 2-8 in regular season play, and 1-4 in the Commissioner’s Cup. Phoenix is having a drastically different season than Las Vegas, and after losing 6 of their last 7 games, they find themselves scraping the bottom of the barrel in both the Western Conference and the WNBA as a whole. Phoenix has lost 3 consecutive games and the Mercury can’t seem to catch a break, as they are facing the best team in the league on Wednesday.

Phoenix is led by Brittney Griner and Diana Taurasi, two of the biggest names in WNBA history, but unfortunately for Phoenix, both Griner and Taurasi are not expected to play due to injury. Sophie Cunningham will look to lead the Mercury on Wednesday, but don’t expect much from the ailing Phoenix Mercury who are just hoping to keep it close against Vegas on Wednesday.

Aces vs. Mercury Prediction

Take the Aces to smoke the Mercury on Wednesday. Phoenix is dealing with too many injuries to key players, leaving them short staffed and vulnerable. Vegas is the best team in the league, and with Griner not on the floor to protect the rim for Phoenix, the Aces will face little resistance. Las Vegas is 5-0 in this year’s Commissioner’s Cup, setting them apart as the only undefeated team in the competition. The Aces certainly have a target on their back as the team to beat, but with Taurasi, Griner, and Diggins-Smith all likely to miss Wednesday’s matchup, Phoenix does not look like the team that’s going to hand Vegas their first Cup loss.
