Las Vegas Aces at Connecticut Sun: Analysis, Prediction, and Betting Tips

The WNBA season continues on Thursday, June 8th with the Las Vegas Aces taking on the Connecticut Sun in the second game of a back-to-back matchup (7:00 PM EST, Amazon Prime). It should be a fantastic matchup, as the Aces and Sun are No. 1 and No. 2 in the WNBA’s power rankings, and is a rematch of last year’s WNBA Finals. The Aces remain undefeated, while the Sun have just 2 losses, and 1 of them is to Vegas. In their first matchup, the Aces won 90-84, outsourcing the Sun in 3 out of 4 quarters. Connecticut will look to bounce back after the loss on Tuesday, but are facing the best team in the WNBA, and the last remaining undefeated side. 

The Las Vegas Aces (7-0)

The Las Vegas Aces are 7-0 (100.0%) and average the most points per game (93.1) in the league. The Aces are 2-0 and home and 5-0 on the road, and are coming off a big win over their conference counterpart. A’ja Wilson and Jackie Young combined for 45 points in Vegas’ win on Tuesday, and the Aces held the Sun to 40.8% shooting from the field, while recording 9 steals and 6 blocks as a team. Vegas shot 50.8% from the field, and while their 3-point shooting was lacking (26.7%), they dominated the paint, outscoring the Sun 48 to 34 down low. The defending champs are off to an incredible start, scoring 90 or more points in 6 out of their 7 games, and are red-hot coming into Thursday’s matchup. 

The Connecticut Sun (6-2)

The Sun are 6-2 (75.0%) and are atop the Eastern Conference standings. They are coming off a 6-point loss to Vegas on Tuesday, but will look to hand the Aces their first loss of the season on Thursday. Connecticut is 3-1 (75.0%) at home, and are 19-12 (61.3%) against the Aces all-time, but the Sun are not expected to beat Vegas on Thursday. Despite Brionna Jones, DeWanna Bonner, and Alyssa Thomas averaging 14.9, 14.6, and 14.4 points per game respectively, the Sun just don’t possess the offensive firepower needed to match the Aces. Connecticut has yet to eclipse 90-points this season, and although they have a top-5 defense, so does Vegas, and the Sun’s mediocre offense will be hard-pressed to overcome the Aces suffocating defense.

Take the Las Vegas Aces to beat the Connecticut Sun on Thursday, June 8th. Vegas will remain undefeated, and Connecticut will lose their 2nd-straight game to the reigning champions. The Aces could tie the franchises best winning-streak (8 games) with a win on Thursday. Vegas can pull it off if they stick to their strengths, which involves good ball movement leading to high percentage looks near the rim. Connecticut is excellent at defending the 3-point line, allowing the lowest 3-point percentage in the league (29.0%), but Vegas doesn’t rely on 3-point shooting, making the Sun’s greatest defense strength obsolete. Connecticut may be the 2nd-best team in the WNBA, but they can’t hold a candle to the Las Vegas Aces.
