New York Liberty at Chicago Sky: Analysis, Prediction, and Betting Tips

newyork liberty vs chicago sky

On Friday, June 2nd the New York Liberty will take on the Chicago Sky for the first time this season (6:00 PM EST, YouTube TV). Friday’s matchup is the first of a back-to-back between New York and Chicago. The Liberty and Sky have played 31 head-to-head matches, and Chicago leads the all-time series 18-13 (58.1%) over New York. Yet despite their historic dominance, the Sky are not expected to win on Friday. In fact, the Liberty are heavily favored by a -10.5 point spread, and a moneyline priced at -700, meaning the Sky need to overcome nearly insurmountable odds in order to secure a win on Friday.

The New York Liberty (-10.5; ML -700)

After dropping the first game of the season, the Liberty have now won three consecutive games. New York is 3-1 (75.0%) through their first 4 games and average 80.3 points per game, the 5th-best average in the WNBA. New York is led by 28-year old Breanna Stewart, who is averaging 25.8 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 3.0 assists. The only other player averaging double-digit scoring figures is University of Oregon sensation, Sabrina Ionescu, who is putting up 16.0 points per game and, like Stewart, was the No. 1 draft pick in her class. The two first overall draft picks have been a deadly combo for New York this season, and Stewart and Ionescu will be expected to carry the Liberty to victory over Chicago.

The Chicago Sky (+10.5; ML +425)

The Chicago Sky are 3-2 (60.0%) through their first 5 games of the season. Chicago is coming off a tough 65-83 blowout loss against the Atlanta Dream on Tuesday, and will look to bounce back against New York. Unfortunately, the Sky are not likely to win on Friday, as they average just 76.0 points per game, and have eclipsed 80.0-points just once so far. Chicago plays decent defense, giving up just over 75-points per game, but against New York, the Sky will struggle to find the basket. Kahleah Copper and Marina Mabrey lead the Sky with 14.6 and 14.3 points per game respectively, and Courtney Williams leads Chicago with 8.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game. Chicago will rely heavily on these three to keep them in the game on Friday, but could struggle to find the hoop against New York.

Liberty vs. Sky Prediction

Take the New York Liberty to beat the Chicago Sky on Friday. New York’s dual threat with Ionescu and Stewart has proven to be a winning formula, and I’m not sure any team could slow them down, let alone the Sky. Chicago is not a bad team, they just don’t have the personnel capable of keeping pace with New York’s barn burning offense. The Liberty shoot a better percentage from both the field (44.6%) and the 3-point line (36.8%), and unless the Sky make a dramatic turnaround, Chicago is likely to lose. The season has just begun but already the Liberty have stood out as one of the best-teams in the league, and the Sky will be hard-pressed to beat them on Friday.

Prediction: New York Liberty Moneyline (-700)
