WNBA Matchup: Seattle Storm at Dallas Wings

The WNBA season continues on Saturday, June 17th with a Western Conference matchup between the Seattle Storm and the Dallas Wings (2:00 PM EST, CBS). It’s the second matchup of the young season between Seattle and Dallas, who played the 2nd-game of their seasons against one another about a month ago. The Wings won the game 95-91 behind a 26-point performance from Arike Ogunbowale. Seattle’s Jewell Loyd led the Storm with 30-points against Dallas, but Seattle ultimately lost the game, and will be out for revenge on Saturday. Both the Wings and the Storm are coming off losses, and are each looking to get their season’s back on track with a win over their conference rival.    

The Seattle Storm (2-7)

Seattle is off to a terrible start. They were 0-4 before they won their first game of the year, but have only collected 1 win since, bringing their record at an abysmal 2-7 (22.2%). They average the fewest points per game in the WNBA (73.4) and have recorded less than 70-points in 5 out of their 9 games. Seattle is coming off a horrendous 63-96 blowout loss against the Las Vegas Aces on Thursday, where they went 37.5% from the field and 21.7% from the 3-point line. The Storm rank in the bottom-half of nearly every statistical metric, and although they hung around and scored their season-high (91) against Dallas in their first matchup, Seattle will not be expected to beat the Wings this Saturday. 

The Dallas Wings (5-5)

The Dallas Wings began the season 3-1, but have struggled with consistency, and now find themselves with a 5-5 (50.0%) record. Dallas is 3rd in the West, 2.5 games ahead of the Seattle Storm, but the Wings are coming off back-to-back losses in their last 2 games. Dallas lost 93-102 against the New York Liberty on Sunday, and then lost 61-79 to the Los Angeles Sparks on Wednesday, failing to eclipse 70-points for the first time this season. The Wings average 83.4 points per game, the 4th-best in the WNBA, but are struggling to stunt their opponents, averaging 84.4 points against per game. However, Dallas is 4-1 (80.0%) at home, which will certainly give them the edge over Seattle on Saturday.

Storm vs. Wings Prediction

Take the Dallas Wings to beat the Seattle Storm on Saturday. Dallas will improve to 6-5, while Seattle will fall to 2-8. The Storm are the worst offensive team in the league, and despite Dallas’ defensive struggles, the Wings offense is leagues ahead of Seattles. The Wings are led by Arike Ogunbowale (21.7 points), Satou Sabally (20.5 points), and Natasha Howard (15.4 points), who are averaging a combined 57.6 points per game. Dallas also leads the WNBA in rebounds per game, averaging 38.4 to Seattle’s 33.4, which will lead to more possessions and more scoring opportunities for the Wings.
