Match Predictor (Win-Probability): New York Liberty (61.8%); Atlanta Dream (38.2%)

The WNBA regular season continues on Friday, June 23rd with an Eastern Conference matchup between the New York Liberty and the Atlanta Dream. The Liberty are -7.5 point favorites in this one, and lead the Dream by 2.5 games in the conference standings. The season series is tied 1-1 between New York and Atlanta. The Liberty won the first game 106-83 in a blowout victory, but Atlanta bounced back, beating New York 86-79 the following week. Friday’s matchup is the third meeting in three weeks between the Liberty and the Dream, and the second in Atlanta, where the Dream will look to snap a three-game home losing streak against a New York side that’s lost just once on the road.

The New York Liberty (7-3; -7.5)

The New York Liberty are 7-3 (70.0%) on the season, posting a 3-1 record on the road and a 4-2 record at home. New York is 2nd in the East and 3rd in the WNBA, 1.5 games behind the Connecticut Sun and 3 games behind the league leading Las Vegas Aces. Against Atalnta, the Liberty are 1-1 and will look to grab the series lead on Friday behind their star player, and 2018’s WNBA MVP, Breanna Stewart

Stewart is averaging a team high 23.9 points and 10.8 rebounds per game, and on Sunday, June 18th she etched her name into the history books once again, becoming the first player in WNBA history to record 200 points, 100 rebounds, and 40 assists in their first 10 games of a season. Stewart was phenomenal on Sunday against Phoenix, recording 28 points, 14 rebounds, and 7 assists, and with University of Oregon sensation Sabrina Ionescu expected to make her return against Atlanta, New York looks prepared to record their second straight win.

The Atlanta Dream (5-6; +7.5)

The Dream are a middling 5-6 (45.5%) on the year. They are 4th in the East, and 6th in the WNBA, which keeps them within postseason contention, but Atlanta will need to play much better, especially on defense, if they want to break the top-five. They average the 4th-most points per game (84.5), but give up the 11th-most points per game to their opponents (86.4), meaning Atlanta will struggle against New York, who posts the 2nd-best offense and 5th best defense in the league.

Atlanta snapped a 3-game winning streak on Tuesday against the Wings, losing 73-85 in a nightmarish game for the Dream. In the loss versus Dallas, there were a record-breaking 10 technical fouls, and one ejection (Dallas’ Arike Ogunbowale), in a contentious game where emotions were heated. Most of the technical fouls were against Dallas, who ultimately won the game, as Atlanta couldn’t capitalize on their opponents lack of self control. Allisha Gray, Rhyne Howard, and Cheyenna Parker, Atlanta’s Big-Three, now look to get the Dream back on track this Friday against the conference rivals.

New York Liberty:

    • Arguably New York’s most important player, Ionescu is on the road to recovery and fully participated in Wednesday’s practice. She is expected to play Friday.
  • Han Xu: Out (Team Leave)
    • 6’ 11” Chinese international Han Xu left the team to compete for China in the Asia Cup and will return July 2nd.

Atlanta Dream:

Liberty vs. Dream Prediction

Take the New York Liberty to beat the Atlanta Dream on Friday. Atlanta is coming off an emotional roller coaster on Tuesday, and while it’s difficult to determine how that will affect their play, the Dream are clearly the underdog against the Liberty. New York’s Sabrina Ionescu, who recorded a career high 37-points against Atlanta on June 9th, is expected to return to the floor on Friday, something Atlanta’s swiss cheese defense isn’t prepared to handle. Additionally, the Dream are terrible at home, winning just 20% of their games in Atlanta, while the Liberty have been excellent on the road, posting a 3-1 record in away matches. If you like rooting for the underdog, take the Dream, but if you like winning, take the New York Liberty.
