One of the things that has been a pain in the neck for the New York Yankees has been, quite simply, the Tampa Bay Rays, and specifically their pitching staff. The Rays have a payroll of about $70 million, while the Yankees’ payroll is upwards of $200 million.
Yet that hasn’t made a difference, as Kevin Cash has steered his team to 16 wins in the last 22 meetings.

NEW YORK YANKEES at TAMPA BAY RAYS, 7:10 PM ET (Tuesday)
Southpaw Jordan Montgomery gets the start for New York. He’s got a 4.41 ERA but a WHIP of 1.13, so he’s shown some control. And we know that the Yankee bullpen has been outstanding.
At this moment these teams are in a virtual tie for the second place spot in the American League East, and the Yankees hold the slimmest of edges (.529 to .528).
The Yankees are in a different place than they were prior to their recent homestand in the Bronx. They won seven out of their nine games, and Giancarlo Stanton was the hero with an RBI single that allowed them to walk off with the win over the Washington Nationals.
Wins have been hard to come by for the Bronx Bombers against Tampa Bay. They’ve scored only 20 runs in six games, five of which they have lost. And this degree of ineptitude goes back, as they have lost 16 of 22 to the Rays, which included last year’s playoff defeat.
Are there some encouraging signs? Sure. Aron Hicks, who was off to a slow start, has hit .370 in his last nine games.
Stanton is at least healthy and hitting. Gio Urshela had to sit out the Washington series (knee), but could be back on Tuesday night. Luke Voit’s return could be uplifting. Voit, if you recall, led all of Major League Baseball with 22 homers last season, but had to take care of a torn meniscus in his knee with surgery during spring training.
He has been tearing it up in his minor league rehab assignment at Scranton-Wilkes Barre. and has been called to the big club. So it’s going to be real interesting to see if manager Aaron Boone inserts him into the lineup.
Aaron Judge did not get the start on Sunday, and walked in a pinch-hitting appearance. He has just one hit in his last 20 official at bats.
The Yankees have not been knocking down the fences on offense, so Voit’s muscle would be most welcome. But Tampa Bay’s mastery over this team is an interesting phenomenon. The Yankees have hit .168 against the Rays’ staff this season (.128 from their left-handed hitters versus TB righties), and we would expect that Luis Patino, who has allowed four batters to reach base in 7-2/3 innings (with ten K’s) will go no further than two or three innings.Then you will see a wave of Tampa right-handers throwing darts after the whole team had Monday off.
