As one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world of tennis, Wimbledon has captured the hearts of millions, epitomizing the grace, power, and tradition of the sport. From its rich history to its pristine grass courts, from the iconic white dress code to the unforgettable rivalries, Wimbledon stands as a symbol of excellence, showcasing the pinnacle of tennis competition. Now, with just four days left, only four men and four women remain to claim the sports sought after prize, a Wimbledon Championship victory.
History of Wimbledon
Founded 146 years ago in 1877, Wimbledon is the oldest tennis competition in the world, and is often considered the most prestigious of the four Grand Slam tournaments. Initially, the event solely featured the Gentlemen’s Singles competition, with 22 players competing. The Ladies’ Singles and Gentlemen’s Doubles events were added in 1884, followed by the Ladies’ Doubles and Mixed Doubles events in 1913. Since then, Wimbledon has consistently set the benchmark for tennis tournaments worldwide.
In recent years, the Federer-Nadal-Djokovic trio has dominated Wimbledon, engaging in their own historic rivalry. The “Big Three” have produced a series of epic encounters, captivating spectators with their exceptional skills, unwavering determination, and sportsmanship. Their matches at Wimbledon have showcased the highest level of tennis artistry, elevating the tournament’s status even further.
The current men’s champion is Novak Djokovic, and the current women’s champion is Elena Rybakina. The most decorated men’s Wimbledon champion is Roger Federer (8) and the most decorated women’s Wimbledon champion is Martina Navratilova (9). Wimbledon’s Final Four
Men’s Singles Odds
- Novak Djokovic (2): -200
- Carlos Alcaraz (1): +240
- Daniil Medvedev (3): +1100
- Jannik Sinner (8): +1200
The Men’s Singles Semi-final matchups will take place on Friday, July 14th. The odds above are the current odds of each player’s chances to win the entire tournament. The Semi-final matches, along with the corresponding odds, are laid out as such:
Semi-final Game 1 (TBD): Carlos Alcaraz (-275) vs. Daniil Medvedev (+215)
Alcaraz is the No. 1 overall Men’s Singles player at Wimbledon, and he enters his Semi-final matchup as the favorite (-275) over the No. 3 seed Daniil Medvedev (+215). The 20-year old Alcarez won the 2022 U.S. Open, securing the first major of his young career. Daniil Medvedev won the U.S. Open the year prior to Alcarez (2021), beating Novak Djokovic in the final to secure the 27-year old Russian international’s first major. Alcarez and Medvedev each have 5 Singles titles in 2023, leaving little to separate these two incredible players.
Semi-final Game 2 (TBD): Novak Djokovic (-600) vs. Jannik Sinner (+420)
Novak Djokovic entered the Wimbledon Championships as the out-and-out favorite (-150) to win the whole thing. Djokovic has faced few players who can keep up with his aggressive, domineering style of play, as he goes for his 7th all-time, and 5th consecutive, Wimbledon Championship title. Jannik Sinner, who Djokovic described as a “complete player”, is competing in his first ever major semi-final, but he is certainly the underdog against Djokovic, priced at +420. Sinner has 1 Singles title this year, and 7 all-time, but must face arguably the greatest men’s tennis champion of all-time, who has an incredible 94 Singles titles, and 23 majors.
Women’s Singles Odds
- Aryna Sabalenka (2): +125
- Ons Jabeur (6): +210
- Elina Svitolina (76): +450
- Marketa Vondrousova (42): +450
The Women’s Singles Semi-final matchups will take place on Thursday, July 13th. The odds above are the current odds of each player’s chances to win the entire tournament. The Semi-final matches, along with the corresponding odds, are laid out as such:
Semi-final Game 1 (8:30 AM EST): Elina Svitolina (+110) vs. Marketa Vondrousova (-135)
Marketa Vondrousova enters as the favorite. She is ranked No. 42 on the WTA rankings, 34 spots higher than her semi-final opponent, Elina Svitolina, who ranks No. 76. Vondrousova may be the better player according to the WTA, but Svitolina is coming off a win over the No. 1 ranked player in the world, Iga Swiatek. It was a massive upset, and one which immediately placed Svitolina on everyone’s radar, but Vondrousova has taken down the No. 12, No. 20, No. 32, and No. 4 ranked players in the world this tournament, setting this up to be an exciting semi-final.
Semi-final Game 2 (9:45 AM EST): Ons Jabeur (+130) vs. Aryna Sabalenka (-160)
Aryna Sabalenka is the No. 2 ranked player in the world for women’s singles, making her the favorite to not only win her semi-final matchup, but to win the entire tournament. It would be Sabalenka’s second major title of 2023, after winning the Australian Open back in January, and he 14th Singles title of her career. Ons Jabeur has reached her second consecutive semi-final at Wimbledon, and will look to her second straight Finals appearances as well. Jabeur has taken down the No. 9 and No. 3 ranked players in back-to-back rounds, but now faces her toughest opponent thus far in what should be a thrilling contest.
