A battle is brewing in the Western Conference’s Central Division as the 2nd place Dallas Stars gear up to take on the 3rd place Colorado Avalanche on Saturday, April 1st (9:00 PM EST, ESPN+). Colorado will host the 4th and final divisional matchup between the Avalanche and Stars in Denver’s Ball Arena. The Avalanche lead the Stars with a 2-1-0 series record, the Stars are 1-1-1, but Colorado and Dallas both average 3.3 goals per game in this series. After the Avalanche buried Dallas in their first two meetings, the Stars came shooting back with an empathic 7-3 victory over Colorado earlier this month. There is a lot riding on this matchup and it should be a close contest, but Colorado is favored (-145) in opening NHL odds, while the Stars are priced as the underdogs (+117).

Regardless of where the Stars end up in the standings, it is a near certainty that they will see the postseason. Dallas is currently 2nd in the Central Division with a record of 40-20-14 and 94 points. They trail Division leading Minnesota by 3 points, but after winning 6 of their last 10, and collecting 13 points in the process, the Stars are incredibly close to clinching their second consecutive playoff berth. Dallas is coming off a 4-1 win over the Blackhawks on Tuesday, and takes on the Arizona Coyotes the night before they travel to Denver. The Stars will face the Avalanche without a day to rest, and they will be on the road, which can be quite taxing.

The Avalanche are 44-24-6 with 94 points through 74 games. The reigning champions are set to make their 6th consecutive playoff appearance, and will be going for back-to-back Stanley Cup victories. The Avalanche have the best odds in the West to reach the finals, but will face intense competition on the way. The Avalanche, like the Stars, have not clinched anything yet, but after going 8-2-0 (16 points) in their last 10, Colorado has built a strong case around why they deserve to compete for The Cup. The Avalanche are coming off a 2-4 loss to the Minnesota Wild on Wednesday, but unlike Dallas, Colorado has had not one, but two days to rest and prepare for Saturday’s highly anticipated matchup.
