Two Evenly Matched Sides Gear Up For Battle | Maple Leafs vs Devils | OSB

Toronto Maple Leafs at New Jersey Devils

Toronto Maple Leafs at New Jersey Devils

The Toronto Maple Leafs finish off a five game road trip in the Garden State on Tuesday, March 7th (7:00 PM EST, ESPN+), when they take on the New Jersey Devils for the third time this season. The series is currently tied, with both teams having beaten the other on the road. The Devils won the first match 3-2 in Toronto, while the Maple Leafs took the second in a 2-1 victory in New Jersey. Tuesday’s matchup will be the final meeting of the regular season between these two, but with both teams primed for the postseason, they could very well find themselves in a 7 game series come playoff time. Regardless, both sides will be focused on Tuesday’s matchup, which considering the first two games, should be a fantastic contest.

Toronto Maple Leafs Breakdown (+110)

Toronto Maple Leafs: A Breakdown of the Remaining Schedule

The Maple Leafs are currently 38-17-8 with 84 points through 63 games. They are 2nd in the Atlantic Division, and 4th in the Eastern Conference (4 points behind New Jersey). In their last 10 games, Toronto went 6-4-0, averaging 3.4 goals, and 2.7 goals against. The Maple Leafs are one of four teams being given >99% chance to make the postseason by FiveThirtyEight, and are projected to end the year with 106 points. Unfortunately for them, Toronto is coming off a surprise 1-4 loss to the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday, and will try to course correct against a talented New Jersey squad.

Despite beating the Devils in their last matchup back in November, Toronto will be considered the underdog on Tuesday. The Maple Leafs moneyline is currently priced at +115. Toronto has been favored in a vast majority of their matchups this season, playing just 9 games as the underdogs, but won 66.7% of those 9 games (6-2-1 as underdogs). The Maple Leafs clearly don’t appreciate being undervalued, and while Toronto is a top-four team in terms of record, they have been inconsistent on the road, winning just 50.0% of their away games. The Leafs will hope that won’t be their downfall against the Devils when they head to New Jersey on Tuesday.

New Jersey Devils Breakdown (-131)

NJ Devils Goal Breakdown: First Goal of the Season and the Career of Alexander Holtz - All About The Jersey

The Devils are 41-15-6 with 88 points through 62 games. They are 2nd in the Metropolitan Division, and 3rd in the Eastern Conference. The Devils, along with the Maple Leafs, have >99% chance to make the playoffs. They went 7-2-1 in their last 10 games, and are coming off a thrilling 5-4 overtime victory against the Arizona Coyotes. Over that 10 game stretch, New Jersey averaged 4.2 goals per game, and 3.0 goals against.

The Devils will be expected to win this game, but not easily. New Jersey and Toronto are very evenly matched. They score a similar number of goals per game, are only 4 points apart in the standings, and the season series is split between them 1-1. The Devils and Maple Leafs have even allowed the same number of goals against them (167). Where the Devils have the edge is on offense, where they have scored 10 more total goals and average more shots per game, which they hope will be enough to torch the Leafs on Tuesday.

Maple Leafs vs. Devils: Prediction

I like the New Jersey Devils moneyline (-131) in this one. The Devils offensive attack has been potent and relentless in recent games, and while the Toronto defense can be a tough nut to crack, I don’t think they’re ready for what the Devils will bring to the party. However, as I said before, the Maple Leafs and Devils are evenly matched teams, and Tuesday’s game, much like their first two matchups, will likely be decided by just a 1-goal margin. New Jersey and Toronto are each in prime playoff position as the 2 seed in their respective divisions, meaning Tuesday’s matchup could very well feel like a postseason showdown. It’s a tough one to call, but I’d go with the Devils at home, who are coming off a thrilling victory, over the Maple Leafs on the road, who are coming off an embarrassing upset.
