Tough Atlantic Division
The Atlantic Division is truly stacked this season. This is a matchup between two of the top teams in said division who have both had stellar seasons. The Maple Leafs enter as a two seed with 114 points, a franchise record for them that eclipsed their previous high of 104. They also broke their franchise record for most wins in a season, a true testament to how good they’ve been. So naturally after such a great season, they’ve got to have an easy first round matchup right? Nope, their prize is a date against the two time defending champ Tampa Bay Lightning, who have been impressive themselves with 110 points on the year.
These two teams crossed paths twice in April, and each won one game handedly with the Leafs taking the first 6-2, and the Lightning winning the second 8-1. Point is this series can and most likely will go 7, and the difference for this game 1 will be who is the healthiest. The answer to that is the Lightning. They are the healthiest they’ve been as a team all season, and showed it being 7-3 in their last 10. The Leafs on the other hand have some key injuries. They are hoping to have first-line left winger Michael Bunting back for Game 1, but the status of his undisclosed injury is in question. Additionally, defenseman Rasmus Sandin is close to returning from his injury which has kept him out since March, but it would be ill advised to throw him into playoff action cold. Finally, two-way winger Ondrej Kase is working his way back from concussion complications and practiced this week with a full-contact sweater on.
