A classic East Coast matchup is set to take place on Saturday, March 4th (1 PM EST, ESPN+) when the New York Rangers make their way to Beantown to face the league leading Boston Bruins. Saturday’s game will be the third matchup of the season between New York and Boston, with the Bruins holding a 2-0-0 series lead over the Rangers. New York lost both games at home, and are averaging just 1.5 goals per game against their East Coast rivals. Boston on the other hand, is averaging 4 goals per game against New York, and are once again the presumed favorites. The odds have the Bruins at -180, while the Rangers are being priced at +150. 

New York Rangers Breakdown (+145)

The Rangers are sitting comfortably with a record of 35-18-9 (win-rate: 56.5%) with 79 points through 62 games. There are 20 regular season games left on their schedule, and while no team has clinched a playoff berth yet, New York is highly likely to see the postseason. The Rangers are 3rd in the Metropolitan Division (7 points out of 1st), and are tied for 5th in the Eastern Conference (22 points out of 1st). The Rangers are a talented side, and will undoubtedly make the playoffs for a second straight year, but according to FiveThirtyEight, New York has just a 4% chance to win the Stanley Cup. Pointsbet has them at +1000 (5th best odds) to win the Cup, which isn’t terrible, but as the season winds down, New York will need to pick it up if they want those odds to improve. 

The Rangers have gone 5-4-1 in their last 10 games, and are coming off a rough 3-5 loss to the Ottawa Senators on Thursday. The loss snapped a 2 game winning streak, which the Rangers will attempt to reconcile on Saturday. Unfortunately, they will need to pull-off the upset against the league’s top-ranked team to do so. Again, the Rangers are one of the better sides this season, but against the Bruins, everyone is an underdog. New York has a better shot than most, but regardless, will not be expected to win this one. 

Boston Bruins Breakdown (-176)

The Boston Bruins have sat atop the standings all season and have pulled so far ahead, that it would take a herculean effort from the rest of the field just to catch them. The Bruins are posting a league best 48-8-5 record, with 101 points through 61 games. They are the only team who has eclipsed the 100-point mark, and have the potential to end the year with the highest point total in NHL history. The Bruins will certainly make the playoffs, and are the favorites to win the Stanley Cup (PointsBet: +400; FiveThirtyEight: 33% chance). Clearly, Boston is the team to beat this year. 

The Bruins are 9-1-0 through their last 10. They are on a 9 game winning streak, the longest current streak in the league. Boston is coming off a dominant performance on Thursday, where they slaughtered the Buffalo Sabres 7-1. During Boston’s win streak, they averaged 4.4 goals for, and just 1.9 goals against. Boston’s recent run of victories has shown everyone just how good they really are, and I pity any opponent who has to play the Bruins when they are in top form.

Rangers vs. Bruins: Prediction

Pick the Boston Bruins (-176) to win the game. The Bruins are in fine form, and with the way they are playing, they look like the team that was promised and then some. The numbers they are posting are ridiculous! They have 9 more wins, 15 more points, and have allowed 25 fewer goals than the next best team. The Bruins compete for their 10th straight win, and will expect nothing short of victory.

For a good example of Boston’s utter dominance, just look at the goal differential numbers. Boston’s is +104 in GF/GA, while the next best differential is the New Jersey Devils at +54. That is a 50 goal difference between the top-two teams in the league, which is just incredible. The Rangers have struggled as of late, and won’t find any respite against the sweeping tidal wave that is the Boston Bruins. Boston has been tough to beat at home, and I don’t expect the Rangers to be the ones to end the Bruins winning streak.
