Seattle Kraken at Colorado Avalanche: Game 2
By Sam Batz
The Stanley Cup Playoffs continue on Thursday, April 20th with a Round 1, Game 2 matchup between the Seattle Kraken and the Colorado Avalanche (9:30 PM EST, ESPN). Seattle released the Kraken upon Colorado in Game 1, winning 3-1 in an upset victory on Tuesday, April 18th. The Kraken looked good, notching 30 shots on goal and holding Colorado to two scoreless periods in the 2nd and 3rd. The Avalanche left the home fans wanting, completing 35 shots but scoring just a single goal. Despite the poor performance in Game 1, Colorado is favored once again, while the Kraken will look to achieve back-to-back upsets.
The Seattle Kraken (+175)
Seattle is the NHL’s newest addition, completing their first season just last year. The Kraken failed to qualify for the playoffs in their debut season, but after going 46-28-8 (100 pts) this year, Seattle qualified for their first postseason appearance in their exceptionally short franchise history. Seattle then achieved an even grander milestone, their first postseason victory, and can now claim to be undefeated in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Seattle Goaltender Philipp Grubauer had an incredible Game 1 performance, recording 34 saves of 35 shots against, for a SV% of 97.1%. Seattle also recorded three goals from three separate players, and will enter Game 2 with the confidence of knowing they can compete with the Champs.
The Colorado Avalanche (-215)
The Colorado Avalanche ended the season with a 51-24-7 record (109 pts), which was good enough to clinch the Central Division Title and a spot in the playoffs. Colorado is going for their second consecutive Stanley Cup Trophy, and the 4th in franchise history. The Avalanche have a 64% chance to make it to the Second Round of the postseason, but need to recoup their losses after dropping Game 1 to Seattle. Colorado’s superior defense didn’t hold in their playoff opener, and Mikko Rantanen was the only player to light the lamp for the Avalanche. If Colorado wants to avoid the 0-2 series deficit, then more of their goal scorers need to show up in Game 2.

Kraken vs. Avalanche: Game Changers
Seattle Kraken
- Jared McCann led the Kraken with 70 points (40 goals, 30 assists) and recorded 2 points (1 goal, 1 assist) in 3 games against Colorado this season. In Game 1, McCann had just a single shot on goal
- Alexander Wennberg recorded 2 points (1 goal, 1 assist) in Game 1. He had 38 points (13 goals, 25 assists) during the regular season
- The Kraken went 2-0-1 against the Avalanche this season, with both wins coming on the road in Colorado
Colorado Avalanche
- Nathan MacKinnon led Colorado with 111 points (42 goals, 69 assists) this season. He recorded 1 assists and 7 shots on goal in Game 1
- Mikko Rantanen led Colorado with 55 goals this season and was 2nd in points with 105 (55 goals, 50 assists). He scored the Avalacnhe’s lone goal in Game 1
- MacKinnon and Rantanen combined for 97 goals, over a third of Colorado’s total goals
Kraken vs. Avalanche Prediction: Game 2
Take the Avalanche to win Game 2. They are going to be out for revenge after their Game 1 loss. Colorado knows they can’t afford to drop 2 games at home. The Kraken are undefeated in Ball Arena this season, but may find it difficult to keep that streak alive. The Avalanche are going to pepper Seattle’s goal and push to create a lot more second and third chance opportunities. I don’t see the defending champs losing two in-a-row at home, and on Thursday, Colorado will even the series 1-1.
Prediction: Colorado Avalanche Money (-215) by the Over (6)
