New York Rangers at Detroit Red Wings
Sam Batz
The Rangers of New York will be in the Motor City on Thursday, Feb. 23rd for a meeting with the Detroit Red Wings (7:00 PM EST, ESPN+). It is the third game of the season between New York and Detroit. Their first matchup ended in a 3-2 victory for Detroit, then four days later, New York crushed the Red Wings 8-2 on their way to victory in the second matchup. With the season series tied 1-1, New York and Detroit prepare for battle once again to settle the score.
New York Rangers Prospects
The New York Rangers are 33-15-9 with 75 points through 57 games. They are 7-1-2 in their last 10 games, but are coming off back-to-back losses in their last two, scoring just 3 total games in both games combined. It was a surprising result for a Rangers team who were on a 7 game winning streak and averaging over 5 goals a game over that same stretch. The Rangers lost to the Winnipeg Jets 1-4 on Monday. New York can chalk that one up as a fluke though, as they have scored 1 or fewer goals in just 17.5% of their games (10 out of 57).
Despite the recent struggles, the Rangers are 3rd in the Metropolitan Division, tied for 5th in the Eastern Conference, and are being given >99% chance to make the playoffs. They have had a great season, and will look to Center Mika Zibanejad (60 points), Defender Adam Fox (53 points), and Left Wingers Chris Kreider (39 points) and Artemi Panarin (65 points), to get the team back on track. Zibanejad leads New York with 30 goals, followed closely by Kreider’s 24, while Panarin leads in assists with 47, followed closely by Fox with 43. The Rangers average over 3 goals a game, and against the Red Wings, who are giving up 3.16 goals per game, should feel pretty good about their chances to get back in the winning column.
Detroit Red Wings Prospects
The Red Wings are 27-21-8 with 62 points through 56 games. They are 5th in the Atlantic Division, 10th in the Eastern Conference standings, and are being given a 20% chance to make the playoffs. The odds are certainly against Detroit, but they have kept their postseason hopes alive by going 7-3-0 in their last 10 games, and only losing 2 games so far this month. Detroit is coming off a 3-1 victory over the Washington Capitals on the road, where they got off just 25 shots, but held the Capitals to just 1 score. Detroit now make their way back home, after a short 2 game road trip, looking to redeem themselves after losing 2-8 in their last game against the Rangers at home.
Detroit is led by Center Dylan Larkin, who has scored the most goals (22), completed the most assists (34), and leads with 56 player points. Defender Filip Hronek and Left Wing Dominik Kubalik are next on the list with 36 player points each, but Larkin has been the main star for the Red Wings. But against the Rangers, Larkin has struggled, recording just 2 goals and 5 assists through 19 games during his career. The Red Wings are a middle-of-the-pack kind of team, but remain in the hunt for a postseason bid, and will enter Thursday’s matchup ready to prove they are worthy of a spot amongst the best in the league.

Prediction
I like the Rangers in this game. New York, despite the recent two game skid, are the better team compared to the Red Wings. According to ESPN’s NHL Analysis, last updated on Feb. 17th, the Rangers rank at No. 8, while Detroit ranks at No. 22. New York out ranks Detroit in nearly every statistic, and while numbers aren’t everything, they do give me a lot more confidence in the Rangers to get the win, than the Red Wings to complete the upset. The Rangers play well on the road, and will have the edge against a Detroit side that gave up 8 goals in their last matchup with New York.
- Prediction: New York Rangers Moneyline and the Over.
