New York Rangers at New Jersey Devils: Game 5 Prediction, Player Props, & Betting Tips
By Sam Batz
The NHL’s Stanley Cup Playoffs continue on Thursday, April 27th when the New York Rangers hit the road once again to face the New Jersey Devils in Game 5 of their First Round series (7:30 PM EST, ESPN). The Series is tied 2-2 after the Rangers took Games 1 and 2 in New Jersey, but the Devils evened things up with wins in Games 3 and 4. In this series, New York has 12 total goals, or 3.0 goals per game, while New Jersey has 7 total goals, or 1.75 goals per game. The Rangers beat the Devils 5-1 in both Game 1 and 2, yet they are +1.5 goal underdogs. New Jersey redeemed themselves after a poor start to the postseason, and are now -1.5 goal favorites at home in Game 5.
The New York Rangers (+1.5; ML +100)
The New York Rangers started this series off hot, scoring 10 goals through the first 2 matchups. But in Games 3 and 4, the Rangers scored just 2 goals. It was a drastic change, and the Rangers will need to be more consistent if they want to make a deep run into the playoffs. New York has a 55% chance to get past the First Round, even though they entered this series with New Jersey as the lower seed. The Rangers finished the regular season 5 wins and 5 points behind the Devils in the Divisional standings, going 1-2-1 against New Jersey, and will need to overcome the odds in order to take the series lead on Thursday night.
The New Jersey Devils (-1.5; ML -121)
The New Jersey Devils are back in the playoffs for the first time since 2018, after finishing the season with their best record in decades (52-22-8). The Devils were bounced in the First Round the last time they saw the postseason, and after horrendous performances in Games 1 and 2, it looked like it would be another early out for New Jersey. But in Game 3, the Devils turned the tide with a vital 2-1 OT victory, avoiding the dreaded 3-0 deficit. New Jersey then doubled-down with a 3-1 victory in Game 4, putting them back on track to get past the First Round for the first time since 2012. The Devil’s offense is struggling to create goal scoring opportunities, but thanks to replacement Goaltender Akira Schmid, who played just 18 games this season, the Devils are right back in it.

Rangers vs. Devils: Player Props
Chris Kreider (Ranger Left Wing): Over 0.5 Points
Chris Kreider is off to a fantastic postseason. He is tied for first in the Rangers with 6 points, but is leading the team with 5 goals in just 4 games. He also has 1 assist to accompany his many goals, but it’s been his precision in front of goal that has dazzled fans and frustrated the Devils. Kreider is shooting 50.0%, and 4 of his 5 goals came during the Power Play. New York’s PP% is 22.2% against New Jersey, and I predict Chris Kreider will take advantage and go over 0.5 points in Game 5.
Jack Hughes (Devils Center): Over 0.5 Goals
21-year old Jack Hughes was taken by the New Jersey Devils with the first overall draft pick in 2019. In 244 NHL games, Hughes has 87 goals and 120 assists. This season was easily the best of his career, and he now leads his team with 3 points (3 goals, 0 assists) in his first ever postseason. Hughes has scored a goal in 3 of the 4 games so far this series, and leads New Jersey with 5.0 shots on goal per game. I predict Jack Hughes will go over 0.5 goals in Game 5.
Rangers vs. Devils Game 5 Prediction
Take the New Jersey Devils to win Game 5. The Devils replaced their main Goaltender, Vitek Vanecek, with 22-year old Akira Schmid, and the difference has been night and day. Vanecek went 0-2, averaged 4.52 GA/G, and had a SV% of just 82.7% in the first two games against the Rangers, so New Jersey’s head coach Lindy Ruff pulled Vanecek and gave Schmid his first career postseason start, and Schmid has been fantastic. He is 2-0, averages 0.91 GA.G, and has a 96.6% SV%, stopping 22 of 23 shots in Monday’s 3-1 win over the Rangers. The nerves of the postseason have run their course, and the rejuvenated Devils will enter Game 5 ready to snag their first home win of the series.
Prediction: New Jersey Devils Moneyline (-121)
