New Jersey Hosts Winnipeg For The First Time This Season | Jets vs Devils | OSB
Winnipeg Jets at New Jersey Devils
By Sam Batz
The New Jersey Devils host the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday, Feb. 19th in New Jerseys Prudential Center (7:00 PM EST, ESPN+). It is the first meeting of the season between the Devils and Jets. Both teams are currently in a strong position to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs. According to FiveThirtyEight, the Devils have a >99% chance to see the postseason, while the Jets are being given a 92% chance to make the playoffs. Sunday’s matchup between these two Stanley Cup hopefuls should make for an excellent contest.
Winnipeg Jets: Can They Beat The Devils?
The Jets are 34-20-1 through 55 games. They currently have 69 points, are 2nd in the Central Division, and 3rd in the Western Conference. According to ESPN’s NHL power rankings, Winnipeg is considered the 7th best team in the league. They have gone 5-5-0 in their last 10 games, but are coming off a 3-1 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday, which snapped a 3 game winning streak. The Jets have racked up 173 goals (16th in NHL) on the season, but will need to have a much better offensive outing against the Devils than they did in their most recent loss, when they converted just 1 goal on 38 shots.
It’s unlikely, but the Jets can beat the Devils if they concentrate their efforts on peppering New Jersey’s goal with shots. Winnipeg is 6-1-0 when taking 40+ shots, but may struggle to get that many shots off against a New Jersey team who allows less than 30 shot attempts per game. The Jets and Devils each have 143 goals against them, so this matchup will come down to offensive execution, and unfortunately for Winnipeg, that is where New Jersey has the edge. The Winnipeg Jets, most likely, will not beat the New Jersey Devils.
New Jersey Devils: Can They Beat The Jets?
The Devils are 35-14-5, the 4th best record in the league. New Jersey is 2nd in the Metropolitan Division, and 3rd in the Eastern Conference, with 75 points through 54 games. ESPN’s NHL power rankings has the Devils as the 4th best team in the league, which is one stop down from previous rankings. New Jersey is 6-2-2 in their last 10 games, but are coming off a loss to the St. Louis Blues on Thursday, and play the Pittsburgh Penguins the day before facing Winnipeg. The Devils, like the Jets, will need to have a much better game on offense after converting just 2 goals on 36 shots in their game against St. Louis.
New Jersey, regardless of recent performances, has a good chance to beat the Jets. They have scored 185 goals (10th in the NHL) and have allowed 143 (tied with Winnipeg for the 2nd fewest). New Jersey will increase their chances to beat the Jets significantly if they can find a way to score 3 or more goals. The Devils are 3-9-1 when scoring 2 or fewer goals, but are 32-5-4 when scoring 3+ goals this season. The Devils are allowing just 2.65 goals against per game, and can beat Winnipeg on the back of their superior scoring ability.

Prediction
Take the New Jersey Devils and the Under in this one. The Devils and Jets matchup fairly evenly, however, the whole point of hockey is to score goals, and that is where the Devils have the advantage. Both New Jersey and Winnipeg are excellent on defense, having each recorded less than 150 goals against, while allowing fewer than 3 goals per game in their last 10 matchups (Winnipeg: 2.50 GA/L10; New Jersey: 2.80 GA/L10). But New Jersey’s offense, led by 21-year old Center Jack Huges, is better than Winnipegs. The Devils have more total goals and average more shots per game (34.1) compared to the Jets (30.5). We know each of them can suffocate the other on defense, but it is New Jersey who will create more chances to score, thus giving them a better chance to win the game.
- Prediction: New Jersey Devils Moneyline and the Under.
