League Leading Bruins Face The Flames | Bruins vs Flames | OSB

Boston Bruins at Calgary Flames

By Sam Batz

bruins vs flames

On Tuesday, Feb. 28th the league leading Boston Bruins travel up to our neighbors in the north to face the Calgary Flames at home (9:00 PM EST, ESPN+). The Bruins have been a dominant force this season. They have the best record, the most points, and are the favorites to win the Stanley Cup. The Flames are still in the hunt for a spot in the playoffs, but after losing their last 2, and only winning 3 out of their last 10, Calgary has dug themselves into a hole. Unfortunately, the Flames face the seemingly unstoppable Boston Bruins in their next game, likely pushing Calgary further away from the playoffs.

Bruins-Kraken takeaways: What we learned from a wild Boston win

The Boston Bruins lead the pack with a 45-8-5 record and 95 points through 58 games. It has been a remarkable year for the Bruins. For a more detailed explanation of Boston’s domination, click here for my breakdown of the Bruins season, as well as their chances against the Edmonton Oilers tonight, Feb. 27th. In short, Boston is unquestionably the best team in the NHL this year. They have the best odds to win the Eastern Conference (+300), as well as the best odds to hoist the Stanley Cup at the end of the season (+450).

Boston has won 6 consecutive games, and are 7-2-1 in their last 10. The Bruins face the Oilers in the first game of a back-to-back, before heading to Calgary, and could very well face the Flames on a 7 game winning streak. The Bruins have already beaten the Flames once this season, 3-1 on Nov. 10th, and will finish off a four-game road trip in Calgary before heading home to face the Buffalo Sabres. Boston is the favorite once again versus the Flames, and will look to pick up two more points on their way to an historic finish.

Calgary Flames Breakdown (+100)

The good, bad, and ugly of the Calgary Flames: Games 11-15

The Calgary Flames are 27-21-12 with 66 points through 60 regular season games. According to FiveThirtyEight, the Flames still have a shot to make the postseason, but after going 3-4-3 in their last 10, their playoff chances have narrowed. The Flames are coming off back-to-back losses, both against tough opponents (Vegas Golden Knights & Colorado Avalanche), and now face the toughest opponent there is. Calgary lost 1-3 to the Bruins in Boston earlier this season, and must now welcome the tyrants into their home, where the Flames have won 53.6% of their games. Calgary will take whatever points they can scrounge, which means even an OT loss will be considered a win, especially against the Bruins.

The Flames are 5th in the Pacific Division (10 points away from 1st), 9th in the Western Conference, and with 22 games left in the regular season, have a 46% chance to make the playoffs. Calgary is +900 to win the Western Conference, and +2500 to win the Stanley Cup. Tyler Toffoli and Elias Lindholm lead the Flames with 52 and 51 player points respectively. Toffoli leads his team in goals scored (25), while Lindholm leads in assists (34). Calgary averages the second-most shots per game (35.4), and against a Boston side who has the least goal against (121), every shot is going to count.

Prediction

Take the Boston Bruins (-121) to win the game. It’s difficult to bet against the Bruins, as they have won about 81% of their games as the Favorites on the road. Overall, they have won 72.4% of their games on the road, regardless of the moneyline, meaning it is nearly always in your favor to take the Bruins when they’re away. Boston is clearly the best team in the league, and even though they enter the game against the Flames on no rest, I am confident they can get the job done. The Flames will create plenty of goal scoring opportunities, but with Boston’s incredible goaltender, Linus Ullmark, between the sticks, Calgary will struggle to get their shots past him.

Prediction: Boston Bruins (-121) Moneyline and the Under (6). Final Score: 3-1.
