Winnipeg Jets at New York Rangers

The Winnipeg Jets continue their road trip on Monday, Feb. 20th when they travel to The Big Apple to take on the New York Rangers. The Rangers return home after a four game road trip from Feb. 11th to the 18th, where they went 3-1 and averaged 5.75 goals per game. The Jets are in the middle of their own four game road trip, but began the trip with a loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets. Winnipeg faces the New Jersey Devils the day before their matchup with New York in a back-to-back against two tough East Coast opponents. Monday’s matchup between the Rangers and Jets will be the second of the season. 

 

Winnipeg Jets Expectations

The Jets are 34-20-1 with 69 points through 55 games. They face the New Jersey Devils this evening, and could add another couple of points to their total. Winnipeg is currently 2nd in the Central Division, 5th in the Western Conference (3 points out of 1st), and according to FiveThirtyEight, have a 92% chance to make the playoffs. The Jets are a top-tier team, but could struggle against the Rangers who have won 8 out of their last 10 

Winnipeg is led by 26-year old Left Wing, Kyle Connor, who has recorded the most play points (62) off of 25 goals and 37 assists. Winnipeg’s Center, Mark Scheifele, leads the team in goals (32), while Defender Josh Morrissey leads the team in assists (45). The Jets face the Devils tonight, and I am unaware how that game finished, but Winnipeg will look to get back on track after their 3-1 loss to the Blue Jackets on Thursday. The Jets scored just 1 goal against the Blue Jackets, and unsurprisingly, are 0-13 this season when scoring 1 or fewer goals. Winnipeg will need to be much better in front of goal to have any chance of beating the Rangers. 

New York Rangers Expectations

The Rangers are 33-14-9 with 75 points through 56 games. New York had won 7 consecutive games going into their matchup on Saturday, but got burned by the Calgary Flames 3-2, turning the winning streak to ash. Regardless, the Rangers are still in prime playoff position, and according to FiveThirtyEight, are a near certain guarantee to make the playoffs. New York is 3rd in the Metropolitan Division and 5th in the Eastern Conference (14 points away from 1st). The Rangers averaged 5.1 goals per game during their 7 game winning streak, and will look to bounce back with a huge offensive performance after the torching by the Flames on Saturday. 

The Rangers are led by Left Wing Artemi Panarin, who has recorded the most player points (65), off of 18 goals and 47 assists. Over Panarin’s 8 season career, he has recorded 7 goals and 17 assists against the Winnipeg Jets. New York’s Center Mika Zibanejad leads the team with 30 goals, but he has lit the lamp just 5 times in 18 career games against Winnipeg. The Rangers will be peppering the Winnipeg goal on Monday, as they know if they sink 3 or more shots, their chances to beat the Jets skyrocket. New York is 29-3-1 when scoring 3 or more goals this season, which equates to an 87.9% win-rate.

I recommend betting on the Winnipeg Jets to win the game against the New York Rangers. According to ESPN’s NHL Power Rankings, the Jets hold a slight edge over the Rangers thanks to Winnipeg’s suffocating defense. The Jets are averaging 2.5 goals against them per game in the last 10, which doesn’t bode well for the Rangers who rely heavily on their goal scorers to win them games. The Rangers have already lost to the Jets this season (Oct. 14, ‘22 Jets 4-Rangers 1), and will likely struggle once more against Winnipeg’s goaltending. New York is 4-11-8 (win-rate: 17.4%) when scoring 2 or fewer goals this season, making their matchup against the Jets, who have allowed the second-fewest goals, a difficult task to overcome.
