Florida Panthers at Carolina Hurricanes: NHL Conference Finals Game 2 Prediction, Player Props, and Betting Tips

Sam Batz

PANTHERS VS HURRICANES

The Stanley Cup Playoffs continue on Saturday, May 20th with the Florida Panthers taking on the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals (8:00 PM EST, TNT). The Panthers upset the Hurricanes 3-2 in a thrilling quadruple overtime Game 1 victory. Florida came out hot, scoring 2 goals in the 1st period and jumping out to an early lead. The Hurricanes fought their way back with goals in the 2nd and 3rd, but couldn’t finish off the Panthers in OT, who scored the winning goal in the 4th overtime period. It was a thrilling contest, and hopefully a precursor of what’s to come, but nothing is certain except one thing: do not underestimate the Panthers.

The Florida Panthers (+1.5; ML +136)

Florida is taking these playoffs by storm, and the Carolina Hurricanes are their latest victims. The Panthers are 9-4 in the postseason despite being the underdogs in every single game. After eliminating the heavily favored Boston Bruins in the First Round, the Panthers truly believe they are the best team left, and they should! Florida is 5-0 in OT this postseason, and haven’t allowed more than 2 goals in their last 6 games, despite giving up 37.5 shots per game. The Panthers have done their best hunting on the road, and after taking the series opener on Thursday, they are now 7-1 in away games, and are playing tremendously well.

The Carolina Hurricanes (-1.5; ML -155)

Someone should have told Carolina not to go to overtime against the Florida Panthers. Carolina dropped Game 1 after an exhausting 4 OT thriller, and will look to recover on Saturday. Game 2 is a huge game for the Canes, a 0-2 deficit would be devastating, especially since Carolina is expected to win the series. Another loss would only turn up the pressure and add to the weight already on Carolina’s shoulders after their Game 1 defeat. The Canes have a lot of work to do, but they are a capable side, and I like their chances in Game 2.

Panthers vs. Hurricanes: Bold Player Prop

Jesper Fast (Hurricanes Right Wing): Anytime Goal Scorer (+400)

The odds may be against him, but Jesper Fast has quietly put in a solid performance for Carolina this postseason. Fast is one of three Hurricane players to record 5 goals in these playoffs, and of those three players, Fast has the best shooting percentage (20.0%). At 31-years old, Fast is having the best postseason of his career, and in Game 2 against the Panthers, I predict he will add to his total with at least 1 goal on Saturday.

Panthers vs. Hurricanes: Game 2 Prediction

Take the Hurricanes to even the series with a win in Game 2. Game 1 was incredible, but don’t expect the same on Saturday. Both teams will be exhausted after that 4x overtime slog, and Game 2 could be a slow moving affair. The Hurricanes have more depth in their team, and even though the Panthers have more points (113 pts) than Carolina (105 pts), the Hurricanes points are more evenly distributed, meaning they have players in every position capable of impacting the game, while the Panthers rely more heavily on their top guys, who will be gassed. Carolina, despite the loss, plays well at home and I don’t see them dropping back-to-back home games to the Panthers, which is why I’m taking Caroliona to win Game 2.

Prediction: Carolina Hurricanes Moneyline (-155)
