New York Islanders at Anaheim Ducks
By Sam Batz
The New York Islanders take on the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday, March 15th (10:00 PM EST, NHLPP/ESPN+). The Islanders are slated for a three game Californian road trip this week, as they face the Kings Tuesday, the Ducks Wednesday, and the Sharks Saturday. The Islanders are 8-5-0 (win-rate: 61.5%) against the Pacific Division, and 1-0-0 against the Anaheim Ducks, who they stomped 7-1 back in October. Anaheim has struggled all season, but unlike the Islanders who are road tripping, the Ducks play their next 7 games at home, in Anaheim’s Honda Center where they will host the Islanders. New York is currently favored at -200, while the Ducks are priced at +165 for Wednesday’s matchup.

New York Islanders Breakdown (-200)
The Islanders are 34-26-8 with 76 points through 68 games. They are 5th in a stacked Metropolitan Division (18 points out of 1st) and 8th in the Eastern Conference. The playoffs are still a very real possibility for New York, who according to FiveThirtyEight, have a 47% chance to see the postseason. The Islanders went 6-3-1 in their last 10 games, racking up 13 vital points, but will look to do better as the regular season nears the end. New York is coming off a crushing 5-1 loss to the Washington Capitals on Saturday, which snapped a three game winning streak, but have an excellent opportunity to collect 2 more points on Wednesday when they face the lowly Anaheim Ducks.
Anaheim Ducks Breakdown (+165)
The Ducks are 22-35-10 with 54 points through 67 games. They are 7th in the Pacific Division and 14th in the Western Conference, giving them virtually no chance to make the playoffs. Mathematically speaking, the Ducks have not yet been eliminated, but based on how they’ve played this year, it is highly unlikely they turn it around in time to make an impact on their standing. The Ducks have the worst goal differential (-99) in the entire league, with a win-rate of just 32.8% on the season. Anaheim went 5-2-3 in their last 10 games, but are coming off a 5-4 overtime loss to the Nashville Predators, who allowed the Ducks to take 37 shots on goal, yet Anaheim still couldn’t find a way to win.

Islanders vs. Ducks: Key Players & Bold Predictions
New York Islanders – Brock Nelson (Center): Nelson leads the team with 63 points (28 goals, 35 assists). In his last 10 games, he averaged 0.8 points per game, recording 4 goals and 4 assists, with a +/- rating of +3. Nelson has 6 goals and 3 assists in 17 games versus the Ducks in his career. I predict the Islanders top-scorer will score at least 1 goal against Anaheim on Wednesday.
Anaheim Ducks – Trevor Zegras (Center): The young 21-year old Center leads the Ducks with 56 points (21 goals, 35 assists). He is the only Duck with 20+ goals and has the most assists as well. In his last 10 games, Zegras averaged 0.9 points per game. In his budding career, he has just 1 assists and 0 goals in 3 games versus the Islanders. Regardless, I predict Zegras will record his first career goal against New York on Wednesday.
Islanders vs. Ducks: Prediction
I would pick the New York Islanders (-200) to win this game. The Islanders have been playing inspired defense, giving up just 2.4 goals per game in their last 10 matchups. Conversely, the Anaheim Ducks have struggled to find the back of the net, and will continue to struggle against New York’s top-tier defense. The Islanders blew the Ducks out of the water in their first meeting, winning 7-1, and I fully expect Wednesday’s matchup to end in a similar result. Anaheim has allowed 86 more goals against than the Islanders, proving the Ducks defense is arguably the worst in the league, and New York will happily take advantage of their horrendous goaltending, as the Islanders continue to fight for their postseason lives.
Prediction: New York Islanders (-200) Moneyline by the Over (5.5). Final Score: 6-2
