Huge Central Division Rivalry Game | Wild vs Jets | OSB
Minnesota Wild at Winnipeg Jets
By Sam Batz
The Minnesota Wild travel up to Canada to take on the Winnipeg Jets on Wednesday, March 8th (7:30 PM EST, ESPN+). The division rivals have faced-off twice already, with the Wild taking home the win in both. The season series is currently 2-0-0 in favor of Minnesota, but the Jets will have two more shots at redemption, the first coming Wednesday night. The current moneyline has the Jets favored at -125, while the Wild are priced at +105. Both teams should be ready for a high-octane, physical battle, as they jockey for position heading into the postseason.
Minnesota Wild Breakdown (+105)
The Minnesota Wild are 36-21-6 with 78 points through 63 games. They have won 8 out of their last 10 games (8-1-1 record) and are currently on a 4 game winning streak. The Wild are 2nd in the Central Division, 5th in the Western Conference, and are tied for 10th (with the Seattle Kraken) in the entire league. Over their recent 4 game winning streak, Minnesota averaged just 2.5 goals per game, but only allowed 1.0 goal against per matchup. Against the Jets this season, the Wild averaged 5.0 goals for and 1.0 goal against over 2 games.
Despite their 2-0-0 record against Winnipeg, the Wild will be considered the underdogs. They have scored less goals and have a lower goal differential than the Jets. The Wild’s rise to power is a relatively recent development, but their future is not yet secure. The Central Division is split by just 7-points between 1st and 4th, and with 19 games left on Minnesota’s schedule, the top-two spots, and an automatic playoff bid, are still very much up for grabs. The Wild must now face fellow Central Division rivals, the Winnipeg Jets, at home, where the Jets have been tough to beat this season.
Winnipeg Jets Breakdown (-125)
The Winnipeg Jets are 36-25-3 with 75 points through 64 games. They are 3-points behind the Wild, meaning a win on Wednesday would bring them within 1-point of their division rivals. The Jets are currently 3rd in the Central Division, 7th in the Western Conference, and 13th in the NHL. According to FiveThirtyEight, Winnipeg has a 67% chance to make the playoffs, and are projected to finish the season with 95 points. Three weeks ago, the Jets had a 92% chance to see the postseason (click here for previous Jets article), but took a big hit in the standings after going 2-6-2 in their last 10 games, dropping 2 additional points after a devastating 3-2 overtime loss to the San Jose Sharks on Monday.
The Jets still have a shot at the playoffs, but will need to tighten things up as the regular season nears its conclusion. They have yet to beat the Minnesota Wild this season, but are still considered the favorites since the game is at home, where the Jets have a win-rate of 63.6% (21-10-2). The Wild on the other hand, have a win-rate of 50.0% (15-11-4) on the road. However, Winnipeg are 1-4 in their last 5 home games, while the Wild have won 2 consecutive games on the road. Winnipeg are in for a battle against Minnesota, but if they can emulate the form they showed earlier this season, they have a shot at victory.

Wild vs. Jets: Key Players
- Minnesota Wild – Left Wing, Kirill Kaprizov: The 25-year old from Novokuznetsk, Russia leads his team with 73 player points (39 goals, 34 assists). In his last 10, Kaprizov averaged 0.9 goals, 0.1 assists, and 1.0 point. I predict he will score 1 goal against Winnipeg.
- Winnipeg Jets – Center, Mark Scheifele: The 29-year old Canadian is 3rd on his team with 57 player points (36 goals, 21 assists). He has 9 more goals than anyone else, and averaged 0.4 goals, 0.5 assists, and 0.9 points in his last 10 games. I predict Scheifele will score 1 goal against Minnesota.
Wild vs. Jets: Prediction
Take the Minnesota Wild (+105) to win. The Jets are favored, but recently, have not lived up to the hype, scoring 26 goals but allowing 38 in their last 10 games. The Wild on the other hand, are one of the hottest teams in the league, and will have their eye on the top spot in the Central Division with a win over the Jets. Minnesota also seems to be Winnipeg’s kryptonite this season, beating them twice already, and scoring 10 goals against Winnipegs 2. The Jets have lit the lamp more than the Wild, but the Wild prevent more goals. I predict defense will win-out in this one, and the Wild will improve to 3-0-0 against Winnipeg on the year.
Prediction: Minnesota Wild (+105) Moneyline and the Under. Final Score: 3-1
