Minnesota Wild at Colorado Avalanche

The top-two teams of the Central Division prepare for battle on Wednesday, March 29th when the Minnesota Wild make their way to the Mile High City to face bitter rivals the Colorado Avalanche (10:00 PM EST, TNT). The Wild lead the division but the Avalanche are right there with them, and with a win on Wednesday, Colorado could surpass Minnesota in the standings. Both sides will presumably make the playoffs but the question of who’s going to top the division is still up in the air. According to ESPN’s NHL Power Rankings, Minnesota is 10th and Colorado is 13th, which should make for a thrilling matchup. The Avalanche are favored at -149, while the Wild are priced at +135.

The Minnesota Wild are 43-22-9 and lead the Central Division with 95 points. The Wild are 3rd in the West (3-pts away from 1st) and are set to make the playoffs for the 10th time in 11 years. Minnesota went 7-1-2 (16-pts) in their last 10 games, posting a goal differential of +13, and are coming off back-to-back wins at home. The Wild hit the road, where they win 52.8% of the time, for Wednesday’s battle against the biggest threat to their divisional supremacy. Minnesota has yet to beat Colorado this season, averaging 2.5 goals for and 4.5 goals against versus the Avalanche.

Go with the Colorado Avalanche to win this game. The Wild are a great team, but without their top goal scorer (Kirill Kaprizov), Minnesota will struggle to find the back on the net. Against Seattle in their last matchup, the Wild recorded just 20 shots on goal, but because of Seattle’s poor goaltending, scored 5 times. The Avalanche are a much tougher opponent, and their goaltender Alexandar Georgiev is unlikely to allow many goals. A win will push Colorado to the top of the division, a position the reigning champions will be happy to hold.
