New Jersey Devils at Carolina Hurricanes: Game 5 Analysis, Prediction, and Betting Tips
By Sam Batz
The Stanley Cup Playoffs continue on Thursday, May 11th with the New Jersey Devils taking on the Carolina Hurricanes in a Game 5 elimination matchup (7:00 PM EST, TNT). The Hurricanes are up 3-1 on the Devils after scoring 4 or more goals in every game of the series. Carolina is out-scoring New Jersey 21 to 11, which equates to 5.25 goals per game for the Canes, and just 2.75 goals per game for the Devils. New Jersey is young and inexperienced, while Carolina is a disciplined side with loads of postseason experience. The Hurricanes enter Game 5 as -1.5 goal favorites, while the Devils will look to upset Carolina in this win-or-go-home matchup for New Jersey.
The New Jersey Devils (+1.5; ML +105)
The Jersey Devils outscored Carolina by 27 goals during the regular season (Devils: 289; Hurricanes: 262) but since entering the postseason, New Jersey has hit a wall. At 28 goals for and 38 goals against, the Devils have the fewest goals scored and the most goals allowed of any team left in the playoffs. They picked a bad time to fall into a scoring slump, and even though they got past the New York Rangers in the First Round, Carolina’s superior defense is proving to be a much harder task for New Jersey to handle. Jack Hughes has finally arrived on the scene, scoring 3 goals in the last 2 games, but the young Center’s efforts are likely too late. The Devils Goaltenders, Akira Schmid and Vitek Vanecek, have had a rough go of it this round, and whoever gets the start in Game 5 will be a very busy man.
The Carolina Hurricanes (-1.5; ML -125)
After back-to-back Conference Semifinal eliminations in 2021 and 2022, the Carolina Hurricanes are highly likely to break that streak. According to FiveThirtyEight, the Canes have a 94% chance to reach the Conference Finals, and are now the favorite to win the Stanley Cup after a dominant performance this series against the Devils. Carolina’s head coach Rod Brind’Amour will tell you his team still has a lot of work to do, but it seems a near guarantee that the Hurricanes will be competing in the next round of the postseason. The Canes are excellent at home, winning 68.3% of the time during the regular season, and posting a 4-1 record at home during the playoffs. Carolina is seemingly scoring at will against New Jersey, and thanks to their suffocating defense, the Hurricanes are the clear favorites entering Game 5.

Devils vs. Hurricanes: Game 5 Prediction
Take the Hurricanes to win Game 5 and advance to the Conference Finals. Carolina has taken this series by storm, and enters Game 5 with a +10 goal differential against the New Jersey Devils. The Hurricanes have 8 players with 3 or more goals this postseason, while the Devils have just 3 guys posting 3 or more scores. The Hurricanes have a much better Goaltending squad as well, who have a collective GA/G average of 2.60, compared to the Devils Goaltenders, who have a GA/G average of 3.46. It doesn’t look good for New Jersey, who’s Game 3 8-4 victory is looking more and more like a fluke. The Hurricanes will win the series, and I would be shocked if that doesn’t happen in Game 5.
Prediction: Carolina Hurricanes Moneyline (-125)
