Calgary’s Disappointing Season Comes To An End | Sharks vs Flames | OSB

San Jose Sharks at Calgary Flames

San Jose Sharks at Calgary Flames

After being eliminated from the playoffs on Monday, the Calgary Flames are set to host the San Jose Sharks on Wednesday, April 12th for their final matchup of the season (10:00 PM EST, TNT). Both the Sharks and the Flames were eliminated from the NHL’s postseason, and while their matchup won’t have any effect on the standings, winning still holds meaning to the players on the ice. Calgary leads the series 3-0-0 over San Jose and will go for the sweep on Wednesday. The Flames average 5.7 goals against the Sharks, while San Jose averages just 2.7 goals against Calgary. The Flames are a -1.5 goal favorite with the moneyline set at -236, meaning the Sharks are the familiar underdogs, priced at +190.

San Jose Sharks Dead In The Water (+190)

The San Jose Sharks did not have a great season, and as a result, are missing the playoffs for the 4th straight season. The Sharks are 22-42-16 with 60 points through 80 games. They are 7th in the Pacific Division and 14th in the Western Conference. San Jose was among the first teams to be officially eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and in two games, their season will end. San Jose has lost 4 straight, went 3-5-2 (8 pts) in the last 10 games, post a goal differential of -77, and are not expected to beat the Flames, whom they are winless against this season.

Calgary Flames Falter At The Finish Line (-236)

There was utter devastation in Calgary on Monday after the Flames lost 2-3 to the Nashville Predators, officially ending any chance to make the playoffs. Now, with a long offseason ahead of them, the Flames must muster the strength to cap off their disappointing season. Fortunately, the Flames face a rather manageable opponent in the San Jose Sharks, whom Calgary is undefeated against and are expected to beat. The Flames are 37-27-17 with 91 points through 81 games, are 5th in the Pacific, and 9th in the West. None of that matters much at this point, but it shows how much better they are compared to San Jose, as well as how close the Flames were to their second consecutive playoff berth.

Sharks vs. Flames: Game Changers

San Jose Sharks

  • Erik Karlsson leads the Sharks with 100 points (25 goals, 75 assists), he is 3rd on the NHL’s assist leaders list, and has 5 assists against the Flames this season. Karlsson is the first defender since 1992 to reach 100 points
  • Timo Meier recorded 31 goals for San Jose, which still leads the team, but the Sharks traded him to New Jersey; Logan Couture now has the most goals (27) out of all current San Jose players
  • James Reimer is the top Goaltender for the Sharks, he has played 42 games and is 12-20-8 (42nd) and averages 3.44 GA/G (45th)

Calgary Flames

  • Tyler Toffoli leads the Flames with 73 points (34 goals, 39 assists) and has recorded 7 points (5 goals, 2 assists) against the Sharks this season
  • Jacob Markstrom (Goaltender) has played 59 games in goal this season, he is 23-21-12 (T-19th) and averages 2.92 GA/G (25th)
  • 24 different players have scored at least 1 goal for the Flames, 10 players are in double-digit scoring figures

Sharks vs. Flames Prediction

Take the Calgary Flames to win on Wednesday. The Flames have blown the Sharks out of the water in all three of their previous matchups, winning by at least 2 goals in each game. Calgary is understandably disappointed about missing the playoffs, but will look to finish the year on a high-note with a win over their division rivals. The Sharks have nothing to lose, but don’t have the talent to make a statement with an upset over Calgary. San Jose has one of the worst defenses in the NHL and the Flames are going to pour it on as a final farewell to the 2022/23 season.

Prediction: Calgary Flames Moneyline (-236)
