The New York Islanders will travel to the PNCArena to take on the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 1 of their best of seven series for the first round of the Eastern Conference Playoffs (7:00 PM ET, ESPN2). New York, ended their season on a good note, winning three of their last five games. In their last game of the season they defeated the Montreal Canadiens 4-2. Meanwhile, the Hurricanes won their last two games of the regular season. They won their last game of the season against the Florida Panthers 6-4. Carolina has been dominant in the Eastern Conference all season and will look to continue that in the playoffs.

Islanders Hockey

The New York Islanders finished the regular season with a 42-31-9 record. They finished the season with 93 points, just barely edging out the Pittsburgh Penguins, who finished with 91 points. In their last ten games the Islanders are 5-4-1. New York got the Wild Card spot int he playoffs and will now have to take on a very dangerous Hurricanes team in round one. The Islanders will have to be on the road for the first two games of the series. The Islanders have been shaky on the road all season with a 17-18-6 record. Look to see if they can stun the Hurricanes in this series and advance.

The Islanders have gotten production from a lot of their players this year. New York has five players that finished with 50+ points on the season. The Islanders have been led by center Brock Nelson who finished the season with 75 points, 36 goals, and 39 assists. Their superstar center Mathew Barzal has also been great this season with 14 goals and 37 assists. Their leading defenseman this season has been Noah Dobson, who finished the season with 13 goals and 36 assists. The Islanders will need these guys to step up against Carolina.

In their win against the Canadiens at home, Nelson led the way scoring two goals in the game. Goalie, Ilya Sorokin had a great game as well saving 17 of the 19 shots he faced with a .895 save percentage. Sorokin has been great all season with a 31-22-7 record, 2.34 goals allowed per game, and a .924 save percentage.

Offensively, the Islanders are averaging 2.95 goals a game on the season. Defensively, New York has been allowing teams to score an average of 2.65 points a game on the season. Look to see if their offense can give the Hurricanes trouble.

Hurricanes Hockey

The Hurricanes finished the season with a 52-21-9 record with 113 points on the season. They finished in first place in the Metropolitan Division. Carolina has been dominant all season long and our looking to continue it in the playoffs. They will have home ice advantage in this series which is a great thing because they have a 28-10-3 record at home this season. In round 1 they will have to face a fiesty Islanders team, who are not a walk in the park.

The Hurricanes have gotten production from their players this year. They have four players above 50 points on the season. Carolina has been led by center Martin Necas who has 71 points on the season with 28 goals and 43 assists. They have also been led by their other center Sebastian Aho who has 67 points with 36 goals and 31 assists. Defenseman Brent Burns has been great in his 19th season as he has 61 points with 18 goals and 43 assists. 

In their win against the Panthers on the road, Burns scored two goals in the game, With a minute left in the game and 5-4 lead, Aho put the dagger in the Panthers by scoring an empty netter to give the Hurricanes the win. Frederik Andersen was good saving 30 of the 34 shots he faced, with a .882 save percentage. Andersen has a 21-11-1 record allowing 2.48 goals in a game, with a .903 save percentage.

Offensively, the Hurricanes are averaging 3.20 points a game on the season. Defensively, Carolina has been allowing teams to score an average of 2.55 points a game on the season. Look to see if their electric offense can give New York’s defense problems in this game.
