Time to Rip the Bandaid Off

The Green Bay Packers travel to California to play against the San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium on August 12th at 8:30 pm. These teams matched up twice against each other last season, one in the regular season and the other in the Divisional Round in the playoffs. The Packers won the regular season game at Levi’s Stadium but they lost at home to the 49ers in the playoffs. This loss was surprising as the Packers had the best record in the league and were the overall number 1 seeded team in the league. This added another loss for Aaron Rodgers in the playoffs and made his record against the 49ers in the playoffs to 0-4. Although this is the preseason, I expect the Packers to want to walk away with a victory and put their unfortunate loss earlier this year behind them. As for the 49ers, they are at home and will use this game, along with the rest of the preseason, to hopefully get answers for their quarterback position. Players are still fighting for a position on the final 52-man roster, so expect to see everyone at their best. It was an interesting offseason for the Green Bay Packers. They signed Aaron Rodgers to a contract extension having him under contract until 2026. They then traded the league’s best wide receiver, Davante Adams, to the Las Vegas Raiders for a first and second-round pick in the draft. After trading Adams, they signed free agent Sammy Watkins and plan to have him help Rodgers in the offense this season. In the draft, they selected wide receivers, Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs, from North Dakota State and Nevada, respectively. We all know who Aaron Rodgers is and what he brings to the team, having won back-to-back MVPs over the last two seasons. But he is growing old and although they signed him until 2026, the contract is constructed to allow changes. The Packers will use this preseason game to evaluate how third-year quarterback, Jordan Love, plays in a real game setting as there have been reports he has improved in training camp. The Packers defense is set to be one of the best this season with cornerback, Jaire Alexander, returning this season fully healthy. They also get all-pro left tackle, David Bakhtiari, back from an injury that sidelined him for all of last season. There has been some concern on whether or not the Packers will be a playoff-caliber team without Adams. This preseason will provide a little insight and hopefully, the Packers can figure out any issues they may have before the season.

Kyle Shanahan drafted quarterback Trey Lance last season to be the franchise player for his team. Last season, the 49ers chose quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to be the starter and let Lance take a year on the bench learning and studying game film. Garoppolo did get hurt and Lance started two games last season. He won one game and lost the other but the experience he gained made the team confident he was their guy and what they had wanted when they drafted him. In the offseason, they allowed Garropolo to seek a trade and named Lance the starter for the upcoming season. Heading into this game, Lance will play and will try to gain more experience in a real game setting.

This game will be more of a learning experience for both coaches as they will see how their quarterbacks perform in a game instead of training camp or practice. It is unsure who will play and who will sit to prevent injury but I do expect the players who are competing for a roster spot to take advantage of this game. Jordan Love and the Packers may walk away with a victory in this match as Love has had time to develop under Rodgers and will translate his improvements from training camp to the main stage.
