Super Bowl Props —  Halftime Shows….They’ve Come A Long Way, Baby

superbowl

Down through the years, there have been some great Super Bowl halftime shows. And before you say it, yes, they have come a long way. On Sunday it’s full-scale, with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, and Mary J. Blige in action, so you are in for a special treat, although to be honest, you should really spend your energy making halftime bets during that period. At SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, CA, the Los Angeles Rams are four-point favorites over the Cincinnati Bengals, with a total of 48.5 points.

In the very first Super Bowl halftime show, played at the Los Angeles Coliseum, you had the marching bands from Grambling and the University of Arizona, along with the Anaheim High School Drill Team (who unfortunately did not get stuck on the highway coming from Orange County) and trumpeter Al Hirt, who was the part-owner of a brand new NFL franchise that was about to take the field in New Orleans.

In later Super Bowls that were actually held in New Orleans, the Super Bowl halftime shows included the likes of Ella Fitzgerald and Carol Channing. Channing, in fact, must have been a friend of Pete Rozelle, because she made two appearances in Super Bowl halftime shows, which tells me she must have been pretty big on Broadway at the time.

At Super Bowl V in Miami, the Southeast Missouri State marching band performed, for reasons I have absolutely no clue about. Five years later, also in Miami, the special guest was the revue “Up With People,” which made a return appearance at Super Bowls XIV, XVI, and XX, after which Rozelle mercifully retired them from Super Bowl halftime shows, much in the same way some people think, say, Brett Favre should have been retired by somebody before last season.

Chubby Checker made an appearance at the Super Bowl XXII halftime show in San Diego, and I think that’s what propelled him to a new life touring the Indian and riverboat casinos, and from what I recall, there were some Elvis impersonators at Super Bowl XXIII in Miami.

It is safe to say that at #25, the Super Bowl halftime shows took a big step forward, with the New Kids on the Block. In the next few years, Gloria Estefan, Michael Jackson, and Clint Black performed, and all of a sudden, the Super Bowl halftime show became more than something that took place while fans went to to the concession stands or the announcer showed first-half highlights.

At Tampa in 2001, Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Aerosmith, ‘N Sync, Britney Spears, aforementioned Mary J. Blige, and Nelly constituted the Super Bowl XXXV halftime show, with U2 taking the stage in New Orleans the next year.

Other Super Bowl halftimes have featured the likes of Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, Prince, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, and The Who.

This year there are once again Super Bowl props that are inspired by the stars involved and posted at BetOnline. For example:
