THURSDAY NFL ODDS PREVIEW — SEATTLE SEAHAWKS AT SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS (10/22) | OSB

By Charles Jay

Right now the Seattle Seahawks are looking for some answers as to how they got off to a 2-4 start this season. Or are they? Remember that this team started out 3-3 last year and they came on like a freight train by being dominant on the defensive end. They have the people to do the same this season, but they can’t let themselves go to sleep when the other team has the ball, as was obviously the case last weekend against the Carolina Panthers, a team without explosive elements. Well, after a short turnaround, they will take the field against the rebuilding San Francisco 49ers in an NFC West matchup that gets underway at 8:30 PM ET at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, the site for Super Bowl 50.

The Seahawks got by with a goal-line fumble on the part of Calvin Johnson and a bad “touchback” call by an official three weeks ago when they beat the Detroit Lions at CenturyLink Field. Then they proceeded to blow a 24-7 lead against Cincinnati and a 23-14 advantage over Carolina to lose those games. This is not a signal that this team is headed back to this ballpark for the “Big Game.”

The Niners were manhandled by Pittsburgh and Arizona in back-to-back weeks, giving up 90 points, and then turned in a drab effort in losing 17-3 to Green Bay, before coming alive with a last-second loss to the New York Giants and a home win over the Baltimore Ravens. The ground game didn’t amount to much in that one, but Colin Kaepernick threw for 340 yards, serving notice that he is starting to turn the corner a little after a rather inauspicious start.

In the NFL odds posted on this Thursday night game by the people at BetAnySports, the Seahawks are laying points:

Seattle Seahawks -7 (+100)
San Francisco 49ers +7 (-120)

Over 42 points -110
Under 42 points -110

Richard Sherman would love to have a big game here. The All-Pro cornerback has been part of a secondary that has allowed almost 66% completions, and he does not yet have an interception. Okay, maybe that isn’t a huge surprise, because quarterbacks don’t like to throw his way all that much. Last year he had only one pick through the first eleven games, but then victimized Niners’ QB Kaepernick twice in a defensive smackdown. The Seahawks stopped San Francisco cold twice last season, allowing them only ten points and sacking Kaepernick ten times.

Yes, the Seattle defense could be difficult for San Francisco to navigate, but BetAnySports patrons have seen Kaepernick improve recently, as he has thrown four TD passes without an interception the last two weeks. Like Russell Wilson, who has been sacked 26 times, he doesn’t always make his decisions before the pass rush gets to him (19 sacks), but he has the ability to do things with his feet. Is head coach Jim Tomsula willing to turn him loose?

If he can buy time, look out for Torrey Smith, who was very primed to meet up with his former Baltimore teammates last week and hauled in a 76-yard touchdown pass. If Sherman is on him, that will be an interesting matchup indeed.
