PRO FOOTBALL BETTING PREVIEW – NEW YORK JETS AT NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (10/25) | OSB
By Charles Jay
This is one of those games where there need not be any hype. It is quite possibly a matchup of the NFL’s best offense against the league’s best defense. It is also part of a very heated rivalry, certainly among the players if not any more between the coaches. The New York Jets have compiled a 4-1 straight-up record this season (also 4-1 ATS) and they feel they are ready to make their move against the New England Patriots, who come into this game as one of a handful of undefeated teams (5-0 SU, 3-1-1 ATS) and on course to score the most points in franchise history. This game gets underway at 1 PM ET at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA, and most of the country will see it on CBS. After the opening kickoff, BetAnySports customers will have the opportunity to continue placing wagers against the pro football betting odds, dealing with dynamic numbers through the facilities of Live Betting Extra.
New England had that big game against the Indianapolis Colts last Sunday night, and they would have had a covering effort had they not that the Colts come in through the “back door.” Of course, that was again with the big buildup due to Deflategate, which occupied much of the storyline during the week. But if you’re handicapping this game, you may want to take a look at some other stories that came out of it. For one thing, New England was not as dominant on the ground as it had been in other recent meetings with Indianapolis, and Tom Brady seems to have less time to throw. There is some transition going on with the Patriots’ offensive line, and that might be a big concern against the Jets’ defensive front, which has to be among the best in the NFL.
In the reduced juice pro football betting odds that have been posted on this game by the good people at BetAnySports, the Patriots are the solid favorites:
New England Patriots -7.5 (-101)
New York Jets +7.5 (-109)
Over 47.5 points -105
Under 47.5 points -105
The Jets have great defensive numbers, that’s for sure. They have limited the opposition to just 3.5 yards per rushing attempt, and five yards per passing attempt. They have intercepted eight passes. They have yielded just 4.4 yards per play, and allowed fewer points per drive (1.02) than any team in the NFL. They have forced teams into three-and-out situations 35% of the time. The only chink in the armor, perhaps, is their inability to get a consistent pass rush going; they have only sacked opposing quarterbacks eight times this year.
Everybody knows that if Brady has time to throw, he is almost untouchable. He is completing close to 71% of his passes, and has been intercepted only once in 197 attempts. And he may have the best receiving weapon on the field in tight end Rob Gronkowski, who has averaged 18.5 yards per catch. He’s going to have a size advantage against almost anyone New York tries to cover him with, so the Jets have to try to minimize the damage he’s going to do to them. It won’t be easy.
BetAnySports patrons also know that the Jets are going to try to play the muscle game on offense. Chris Ivory is averaging a robust 5.5 yards on the ground, and even though New England has surrendered 4.8 yards per carry, the Patriots will probably shifted their defensive emphasis to stopping him first. This is where Todd Bowles and his coaching staff need to counter with continued success from wide receiver Brandon Marshall, who has put together four straight 100-yard games – the first time that is happened with this franchise since Don Maynard did it in 1968. Malcolm Butler, who came up with the big Super Bowl interception of Russell Wilson with seconds remaining, will probably draw the assignment of shutting down Marshall.
