The Chicago Bears hope to be cooking up some surprises for a raw rookie quarterback on Monday night when they play host to the Philadelphia Eagles at Soldier Field. But when it comes down to it, how “raw” is this rookie, really? That is the question that might be answered sometimes after the 8:30 PM ET kickoff. Wentz was originally supposed to sit the bench for a while and get acclimated to the NFL, much like the #1 pick, Jared Goff of the Los Angeles Rams, is presumably going to do. Philadelphia had Sam Bradford, last year’s starter, who was going to have the job until such time as Wentz was ready. But that whole dynamic changed when Teddy Bridgewater dislocated his knee, and the Minnesota Vikings had to find a quarterback quickly. They made Eagles management a nice offer for Bradford (both first and fourth-round draft picks) and the decision was made for Wentz to take over right away.

Even though he had missed a considerable part of the pre-season with injured ribs, the rookie had shown the staff enough to convince them that he could get the job done. Wentz, unlike Goff, had been in a pro-style offense at North Dakota State, and that was something that aided him in his adjustment. Against the Browns last week, he went 22-37 for 278 yards and two touchdowns. Most importantly, he did not throw an interception.

He has re-made things around the Eagles, and they will be putting a lot of pressure on Chicago’s offensive tackles, which means Cutler will be under siege once again.
