The Washington Redskins couldn’t get out of their own way when it came to running the football last week. That was enough of a concern against the Atlanta Falcons in the 23-17 loss, but it could be even more difficult as they go up against the New York Jets, who has one of the better and deeper defensive lines in the league. Washington’s situation is this – they lost Alfred Morris in the off-season, as the former Pro Bowl running back signed with division rival Dallas. Seventh-round pick Keith Marshall out of Georgia, who has had some injuries but possesses some talent, is a possibility to support Jones. But he had minus-1 yard vs. Atlanta, while Jones had one yard on three carries. Marshall is not going to make the team with efforts like that.

It’s hard to say how much the Jets will play their defensive starters; head coach Todd Bowles plays things very close to the vest. But last year’s meeting between these teams says something, as the ‘Skins had just 34 rushing yards on 17 carries.

What are the Jets going to do with Christian Hackenberg? The second-round draft pick out of Penn State is itching to play, but he did not see action last week in the 17-13 win against Jacksonville. Maybe Bowles will turn to him and maybe he won’t; perhaps he is trying to devote more time to seeing whether Bryce Petty, the second-year player out of Baylor, is deserving of a roster spot, which might give the Jets four quarterbacks coming in the regular season. Geno Smith, who struggled in practice sessions this week and completed eight out of 14 passes against the Jags, is secure as the veteran backup to Ryan Fitzpatrick, according to Bowles.
