NFL ODDS & PREVIEW — SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS AT SEATTLE SEAHAWKS

The San Francisco 49ers gave their fans a lot of hope in the opening week, as they registered a shutout against the Los Angeles Rams. But things on the defensive side of the football went a little awry last weekend, as they gave up 46 points to the Carolina Panthers. Now, with a 1-1 record, they take the field against the Seattle Seahawks in Sunday afternoon NFL action that begins at 4:05 PM ET at CenturyLink Field in Seattle. The Niners were not a strong road team defensively last season, giving up almost 32 points per game. They were going through an awful lot of transition on that side of the ball last year, having to replace a lot of departed starters. And there are naturally questions about them after the 46-27 loss in Charlotte.
But first-year coach Chip Kelly, who made his mark originally at the University of Oregon, is known for his creative offensive approach, and the word is that they were rather satisfied with how they often they kept Carolina defense off-balance with the up-tempo approach. Expect Blaine Gabbert to call more plays on the fly in this one.
In the NFL odds posted on this game by the people at BetAnySports, Seattle is a substantial favorite:
Seattle Seahawks -9.5
San Francisco 49ers +9.5
Over 41 points -110
Under 41 points -110
Seattle has not had a lot of success on offense over the first two games, as they have scored only 15 points. Last week it was a big downer, as they went into the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and dropped a 9-3 decision to the Rams. Thomas Rawls, who had 209 yards against the Niners when he faced them last season, has been dealing with some injury difficulties, so it was very fortunate that Christine Michael came through with a nice game last week, and he leads this team with 126 yards on the ground, in the first season after they had to bid adieu to Marshawn Lynch.
But the real problem is the bad ankle for quarterback Russell Wilson. His mobility is affected somewhat by that, and he is not making many runs from scrimmage, with only 30 yards so far. Remember that he has shown a propensity to get sacked, so expect that the Niners will bring the pressure.
BetAnySports patrons know that a much taller task will be for the 49ers to get some receivers open against the Legion of Boom. San Francisco has not necessarily shown an explosive element, but they will try to keep their best receivers away from Richard Sherman, who generally takes only one side of the field. Of course, that could open up some opportunities, but what the Niners really have to do is establish a running game. Carlos Hyde is the back they will depend on, and hopefully he will improve upon his 3.3-yard average through the first two games. Seattle’s defensive front has surrendered 2.8 yards a pop.
This series has usually gone low-scoring; in fact, six of the last seven meetings have been “under” the total. Will that change with Kelly running a faster pace than the Niners have done in recent years? We can tell you that the Seahawks are 9-0-1 ATS in the last 10 meetings, and without major personnel upgrades on the part of San Francisco, that trend could continue.
