NFL ODDS PREVIEW – DALLAS COWBOYS AT NEW YORK GIANTS (10/25)

By Charles Jay

The Dallas Cowboys feel they did not have enough success replacing Tony Romo with Brandon Weeden, and from one perspective, you can’t blame them, as they lost all three games playing without their starting quarterback. Now they turn to a journeyman who will be making his 73rd start in the NFL, as Matt Cassel leads them into action against the New York Giants in an NFC East rematch that takes place at 4:25 PM ET at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ. This game will be televised on Fox Network, and BetAnySports customers will have the opportunity to keep track of the game and place wagers in real-time through the magic of Live Betting Extra. Weeden had completed 72% of his passes and for a 7.5-yard average, which is actually more money per-pass basis than Eli Manning of the Giants. But the bottom line is that there were no victories for the Cowboys during this time, and Weeden, a former first-round draft choice of the Cleveland Browns, has lost a dozen straight starts. Dallas had acquired Cassel about a month ago, as he had been cut by Buffalo, then re-signed, then traded to the Cowboys. At one time he was considered a very hot free agent, and after making a move from New England to Kansas City, he made the Pro Bowl in 2010. But he has not had a lot of luck of late, throwing 14 touchdown passes with 13 interceptions over the last two seasons.

Dez Bryant is still nursing a broken foot, so he is not available for Cassel to throw to. But Jason Witten, the All-Pro tight end, is on hand, and with 30 catches on the season, he is going to be the key man in the Dallas passing attack. There is also something of a shakeup in the backfield, as Christine Michael will get extended playing time, as coach Jason Garrett is desperately looking for an answer at the running back spot.

In the reduced juice NFL odds that have been posted on this game by the people at BetAnySports, the Giants are the favorites at home:

New York Giants -3 (-110)

Dallas Cowboys +3 (+100)

Over 45 points -105

Under 45 points -105

The Giants clearly want to rebound after a very listless effort against the Philadelphia Eagles, in which the defense gave up 438 yards from scrimmage. When you are that weak in your stop unit, you don’t have an opportunity to take advantage of three interceptions, which Sam Bradford tossed to them. New York surrendered 155 yards on the ground, although they have usually been a pretty stingy team against opposing rushing attacks, allowing just 3.6 yards per attempt.

Whether this is due to the presence of Weeden or just coincidence, Dallas has been outscored in the second half of its last three games by a 58-13 margin. They have also forced only three turnovers, which is the lowest figure in the league. And only the San Diego Chargers have had a worse average starting field position.

BetAnySports patrons know that the Giants would love to forget the first meeting between these two, in the opening Sunday night game. Dallas had the statistical edge, out-gaining the Giants 436-289, but the Giants were able to hold on all the way up until the end, when bad decisions did them in. One of them involved Manning making a throw through the end zone with time running out, instead of killing some clock time, which would have given Romo and the Cowboys a lot less time to mount a comeback. But they were able to do so, scoring the winning touchdown with just 11 seconds left.

Odell Beckham, in case you’re interested, will certainly play in this game. He’s got hamstring issues, and practiced very lightly this past week, but he will be there. He played 66 out of the 68 snaps his offense had against Philadelphia, and had a touchdown reception.
