The Carolina Panthers will be missing last year’s Most Valuable Player for their Monday night date against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but there are probably other reasons for them to panic. They hit a new low last week on defense, and their running game has hit a snag. So Tampa Bay backers probably have some optimism as they go into this game at Bank of America Stadium that begins at 8:30 PM ET. Cam Newton got injured last week on attempted run against the Atlanta Falcons and suffered a concussion. Jonathan Stewart is out of action, and so the back who will get the most focus is Fozzy Whitaker, who has run 27 times for 141 yards, and seems to be most valuable out of the backfield, with 80 receptions.

Carolina has allowed all four of its opponents this season to score more than 20 points, and they did that only seven times during the 2015 regular season, as they roared to their third straight division title and eventually wound up in the Super Bowl. So the question has to be brought up as to whether Jameis Winston, the Tampa Bay quarterback, can do some damage. Winston has been inconsistent, to say the least, and he was sacked five times last week against the Denver Broncos, being intercepted twice. On the season, he is 58% accurate with only a 6.3-yard average per attempt, and he has thrown eight interceptions.
As much as the Panthers could use a running back who could help them chew up some territory, Tampa Bay could really utilize the services of the running back as well. But Doug Martin and Charles Sims are both listed as doubtful for this game. The Bucs were held to just 215 net yards against the Broncos’ defense last week, and you have to believe that the Panthers, who are prideful if nothing else, are going to be in an angry mood after surrendering 571 yards and 48 points to the Atlanta Falcons last week.
In the 2013 season, Carolina started at its season 1-3, then went 11-1 the rest of the way. One would imagine they still have what it takes to stop most teams; their defensive “three-and-out” average of 32.6% his second best in the league.
