NFL BETTING PREVIEW 10/30: NEW YORK JETS AT CLEVELAND BROWNS

The New York Jets are in quite a drama this season, as things have plummeted. But they may have gotten something of a nudge in the right direction last week as they try desperately to cling to some playoff hopes. On Sunday they will take the trip to Lake Erie as they encounter the Cleveland Browns, in action that is set to get underway at 1 PM ET at FirstEnergy Stadium. BetAnySports customers will have a chance, as they are watching it live regionally on CBS, to access Live Betting Ultra so that they can place wagers on the action in real time.

The Jets had themselves a quarterback situation. Well, they actually STILL do. Ryan Fitzpatrick had been benched after throwing eleven interceptions, and was replaced by Geno Smith, who started against Baltimore last week. But Smith tore his ACL, and Fitzpatrick came into the game and led the Jets to a touchdown drive and ultimately a victory.

But that’s not the drama we’re talking about. In the locker room, Fitzpatrick laid in to the coaches, the GM and the owners for not having enough faith in him. Clearly he was bitter about being sat down. And now he is the “man,” until somebody like Bryce Petty is ready to play.

In the NFL odds that have been posted on this game by the folks at BetAnySports, the Jets are favored on the road:

New York Jets -2.5
Cleveland Browns +2.5Over 44 points -110
Under 44 points -110

Fitzpatrick has since made an adjustment of sorts on his comments, though not a big one. He says that he was trying more to illustrate how he needed to have belief in himself while others didn’t. Okay, but the numbers tell us something, and they always will. He has been around this game long enough to know that when you turn the ball over to much, you are going to get yanked. Period.

What is most important for the Jets, and what will help to mitigate any damage that is done by Fitzpatrick’s interceptions, is the play of Matt Forte, who woke up a little against the Ravens and 100 yards on thirty carries. Of course, that doesn’t come out to a lot per carry, and indeed he is averaging only 3.5 ypc.

Cleveland is going through its own quarterback situation, as BetAnySports patrons may have noticed. But theirs is dictated by injuries, not controversy (the way it was last season with Johnny Manziel). Cody Kessler, who has given head coach Hue Jackson enough confidence to start thinking of him as a “quarterback of the future” possibility, suffered a concussion against Cincinnati and is out. So it’s time once again for Josh McCown, who broke his collarbone in the second game of the season, which opened the door for Kessler in the first place. Supposedly he had a tremendous week of practice, so Jackson, as well as some of his Cleveland teammates, is excited about having him back.

One of the guys to watch in the Jets’ lineup is Quincy Enunwa. who has had to pick up some of the slack upon the injury to Eric Decker. Enunwa now had 409 yards in receptions, which indicates he is making the most of his chance to be the #2 receiver (behind Brandon Marshall). But Decker was nonetheless Fitzpatrick’s prominent red zone target, and the Jets have scored TD’s only 37.5% of the time in the red zone, which is second-worst in the league.
