NFL BETTING PICK — MIAMI DOLPHINS AT BUFFALO BILLS
By Charles Jay
The Miami Dolphins got some pretty good results out of their quarterback last week, and so those players who were not very confident having Matt Moore at the controls are much more comfortable now. Of course, four touchdown passes will often have that effect. On Saturday Moore will lead the Dolphins against the Buffalo Bills in an AFC East game that will begin at 1 PM ET at New Era Field in Orchard Park, NY. Moore got the start in place of the injured Ryan Tannehill last week and had a lot of success against the Jets’ defense, leading them to a 34-13 victory. He is a wily veteran who has been around this team for a while, and even though he hadn’t started a game since the 2011 season, he was able to step right in. It did not hurt the Dolphins that the Jets turned the ball over four times and had a punt blocked.
Miami is 9-5 straight-up and 8-6 against the football pointspread. And they are in position for a wild card spot in the AFC, with teams like the Denver Broncos and Baltimore Ravens (or the Pittsburgh Steelers – whoever doesn’t win the AFC North) chasing them. And they have accomplished this despite being able to convert only 35% of their third downs.
The Bills have feint hope of reaching the playoffs, but they have to win this game and next week against the Jets. And if they don’t get there, Rex Ryan’s head coaching job is said to be in serious jeopardy. This is only his second year at the helm, but management was rather clear that the Bills had to make the playoffs or else.
In the NFL betting odds posted on this game by the people at BetAnySports, the Bills are favored:
Buffalo Bills -4.5
Miami Dolphins +4.5
Over 42 points -110
Under 42 points -110
Tyrod Taylor, who may not be around all that much longer in Buffalo, is trying to make the most of the time he has left, but management is going to have to make a decision as to whether this team can go to the next level with him as the starting quarterback. He ran for 49 yards last week, and on the season he has thrown just six interceptions in 397 attempts. He has Sammy Watkins at his disposal once again, and he’s averaged 14.4 yards per catch.
This team can run the football; there is no doubt about that. In fact, the Bills are the best team in the NFL when it comes to traveling by way of land. They have averaged a robust 5.5 yards per carry, and they have scored many more TD’s on the ground (27) than they have by air (14). BetAnySports patrons, however, know that it was the Dolphins who turned those tables on the Bills the first time around, as Jay Ajayi ran for 214 yards against them in the 28-25 Miami victory. But Ajayi has had only 204 yards in his last four games. Is he do another breakout game? Or was he more or less a flash in the pan?
Well, while Buffalo has done a great job rushing the passer (38 sacks), they have been somewhat vulnerable to opposition rushing attacks, giving up 124 yards a game. So this could be the opening for Ajayi. If you can come to grips with the idea that having Moore in place of Tannehill doesn’t handicap the Dolphins a whole lot, it isn’t that difficult to take the points here, as with the exception of center Mike Pouncey, they are healthy on the offensive line.
