MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL PREVIEW — DEFENSE NOT LIKELY A PRIORITY AS EAGLES HOST SEAHAWKS
By Charles Jay
Will the nightmare known as the Philadelphia Eagles stream end in time for this team, just three years after a Super Bowl victory, to win the worst division in the NFL? That is what they’re hoping, for sure, and it may be what some betonlinesports fans are asking themselves, but are they taking severe enough steps to turn something around?
Their backs are to the wall as they line up against the Seattle Seahawks in a game that begins at 8:15 PM ET on Monday night. Lincoln Financial Field is the site, and this is where these teams battled twice last season as well.
As this game kicks off, the Eagles are actually the third-place team in the NFC East. The New York Giants and Washington Football Team are ahead of them at 4-7. With a record of 3-6-1, Philadelphia will edge a half-game ahead of both if they can come away with a victory.
What they’ll have in front of them on Monday night is a Seattle team that is in a nip-and-tuck battle of its own, as the Seahawks are now a half-game ahead of the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC West – after the Rams lost to San Francisco on Sunday.
And at betonlinesports, Seattle is listed as the favorite in the Monday Night Football odds:
Eagles Vs Seahawks 2020 what do the stats tell us.
Seattle Seahawks -6 (-120)
Philadelphia Eagles +6 (+100)
Over 49 Points -110
Under 49 Points -110
Oddly, these teams played twice last season, and both of those games resulted in 17-9 victories by the Seahawks. Both of them were played at the “Linc” as well, in case there were any questions about whether the Seahawks could be comfortable at this venue.
It was a different Eagles team last year; healthier and for part of the season, without Carson Wentz. Judging from the results this year, being without Wentz isn’t such a bad idea. He has been intercepted 14 times, and that doesn’t really tell the whole story. Wentz has often looked confused and panicked in the face of pressure. And even though he has a tendency to throw it down the field, as opposed to the very short passing game, such a thing has not worked out to his advantage, as he has been sacked 40 times, which was the highest total in pro football coming into this week’s action.
Seriously, the difference between Wentz and Russell Wilson, who is going to suffer his share of sacks, is that Wilson not only does a better job of scrambling to get himself out of trouble, he also throws the deep ball better.
And the Seahawks have really been able to exploit a pair of big-play receivers in Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf. What we’ll have to see is if the return of Chris Carson will prompt the ‘Hawks to run the ball more. Last season they were sixth in the league in Run Play Percentage. This year they are 24th. Knowing how much Pete Carroll likes to run the ball, you can consider that out of character.
For the time being, they are who they are. And that goes for the defense as well. Sure, they are a little better on defense with the addition of Carlos Dunlap and the presence of a healthy Jamal Adams. But the Seahawks have allowed more yardage than any other team in the NFL – by far.
And the Eagles may look a bit different, here and there. While Doug Pederson will not remove Wentz as the starting quarterback, he will apparently be using rookie Jalen Hurts in special packages during the game. Maybe that adds some spice to the attack.
And what people should take note of is that the Eagles have been getting healthier with their skill players. So they will have a rather robust receiving corps out there as well as the top running back Miles Sanders.
We’re not sure how much we trust Philadelphia here. But we can convert our basic distrust in the Seahawks’ defense into an OVER play on this game.
