MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL BETTING — PITTSBURGH STEELERS AT SAN DIEGO CHARGERS (10/12) | OSB
By Charles Jay
One thing that is for certain as BetAnySports customers anticipate the kickoff for Monday night’s game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and San Diego Chargers is that coach Mike Tomlin is going to have to get a more productive effort out of Michael Vick, who was handicapped last time because of having so little time spent with the first team offense but does not have as much as an excuse now.
Vick, who signed with the Steelers deep into training camp, was barely conversant with the team’s offensive scheme and philosophy when he had to come into the game cold two weeks ago in St. Louis, as Ben Roethlisberger injured his MCL. And he had to take a crash course for the team’s home game that happened just four days later against the Baltimore Ravens. But now he has had some time to settle into what this team, likes to do, and he will show what he has picked when these teams square off at 8:30 PM ET at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego.
Most of his throws were short against Baltimore, and that was reflected in his 4.8-yards average. Le’Veon Bell, the team’s workhorse running back, took the ball further on every touch (5.9 ypc). But with Martavis Bryant coming back from his four-game NFL suspension, Vick will have a full complement of weapons at his disposal. The only question, one would ask, is whether he is going to be one of them.
In the Monday Night Football betting odds that have been established on this game by the people at BetAnySports, the Steelers are the underdogs:
San Diego Chargers -3.5
Pittsburgh Steelers +3.5
Over 46 points -110
Under 46 points -110
Yes, the running game is crucial for the Steelers to establish on Monday, and when you look at the numbers for San Diego in the early going, that seems like a task that can be accomplished. The Chargers have been allowing 4.9 yards per carry, so maybe Vick gets to operate in some favorable down-and-distance situations. Obviously, another thing he brings to the table that Roethlisberger really did not is the ability to run from scrimmage, although offensive coordinator Todd Haley probably does not want him to do very much of that.
There are other angles on this game that naturally need to be explored. BetAnySports patrons know that the Pittsburgh defense is a work in progress, having undergone something of a transition with new leadership and a new coordinator (Keith Butler, replacing Dick LeBeau). After facing Tom Brady and Joe Flacco during the season’s first four weeks, they encounter yet another challenge with Philip Rivers, who has once again been dealing with injury problems on his offensive line but is putting up impressive numbers, with 71% completions and 8.9 yards per attempt.
He has connected with Keenan Allen 33 times, and gets Antonio Gates, the future Hall of Famer, back at tight end this week after a four-game suspension. But Stevie Johnson is out with hamstring issues, Malcom Floyd may not play after he suffered a concussion, and Jacoby Jones has a high ankle sprain. That limits Rivers’ options, and he’ll have an aggressive Steeler pass rush, which has chalked up 14 sacks already, bearing down on him.
