The New Orleans Saints are seeking their first win of the season, as they have grown a little weary after having started 0-2 in each of the last three years. And they will have an emotional and super-charged setting for them to accomplish it, as they play host to the Atlanta Falcons in Monday night football action that is slated to get underway at 8:30 PM ET at the Superdome. The Saints have arguably played well enough to win both games, losing by a total of four points. In the opener, the Oakland Raiders unexpectedly went for a two-point conversion after a last-minute touchdown, making it work and giving New Orleans some heartbreak. Then last week, despite the fact that their much-maligned defense held the New York Giants without an offensive touchdown, they still lost 16-13 because they managed only 288 yards of offense and had a field goal blocked and brought back for a TD.

Falcons fans had to be discouraged after a 31-24 loss to Tampa Bay in the first week, as Jameis Winston (4 TD passes) carved them up. But they went onto the road and onto the worst playing surface in the NFL to defeat the Raiders last weekend, racking up over 500 yards, as the Saints had done the week before.

It would seem that Atlanta’s defensive line might make for a natural target for the Saints’ running game, because it has allowed 4.6 yards per carry, and so if New Orleans is going to try and achieve some balance, this would be the time. They have a former Heisman Trophy winner (Mark Ingram) in the backfield, but they ran it only 13 times against the Giants last week, in what was a close game.

Future prospects appear pretty good for what Brees might be able to do with this set of receivers, however. Neither Willie Snead nor Brandin Cooks have been with him all that long, and both are producing. Michael Thomas, the rookie from Ohio State, has a lot of promise. And we’ll be interested how quickly a chemistry can develop with Coby Fleener, who had been joined at the hip with Andrew Luck ever since their days together at Stanford.

This series has seen the Saints win 15 of the last 20 meetings, but there has also been a road team bias as far as the football pointspread is concerned. The Falcons have covered 27 of the last 37 when visiting the Crescent City.
