CLEVELAND BROWNS AT BALTIMORE RAVENS 11/10 NFL BETTING PREVIEW
If the Cleveland Browns are ever going to win again, the right time might be when they confront a team whose offense is struggling about as much as theirs. Could that possibly be Thursday night against the Baltimore Ravens? We will indeed find out, in this game that takes place at M&T Bank Stadium, kicking off at 8:25 PM ET. The Browns almost didn’t show up last Sunday, as they were out gained 422-222 by the Dallas Cowboys. They have not gotten awful play out of rookie Cody Kessler at quarterback. Actually, what did anyone expect? The raw strength of his arm was questioned by NFL scouts, and he has not magically acquired the ability to go deep down the field. But you must admit that he has taken care of the ball pretty well, as he has been intercepted only once all year. Kessler did not start the first time the Browns and Ravens met; in that game, Josh McCown injured his shoulder, and Kessler took over the next week.
The Ravens started out of the gate quickly, as they had a healthy team. But injuries started to affect what they were able to do on the field. They had lost four consecutive games until coming back to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 21-14 last week. But they were hardly a well-oiled machine on the offensive end; they had only 274 total yards on the day, and 95 of them came on one pass play, from Joe Flacco to Mike Wallace.
In the NFL betting odds that have been posted on this game by the people at BetAnySports, the Ravens are a favorite:
Baltimore Ravens -7.5
Cleveland Browns +7.5Over 44 points -110
Under 44 points -110
In the first encounter, the Browns raced out to a 20-0 lead, and at that point Cleveland fans were probably very encouraged that McCown had gotten the starting assignment in place of Robert Griffin, who had injured his shoulder in the opener, a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. But when they lined up for the extra point after scoring their third touchdown in the first quarter, they had it blocked, and Baltimore ran it back for a two-point tally. Cleveland never scored another point again as the Ravens went on to a 25-20 victory. In the Browns are now at 0-9.
They have not helped themselves with all of their mental mistakes either; center Cameron Erving, who has been plagued by injuries, got himself ejected from the game early in the first quarter against Dallas. At that point, the offensive line got disrupted, at least in the words of left tackle Joe Thomas. Kessler threw for 203 yards, which was not nearly enough.
BetAnySports patrons should take note that the Browns usually get off to a slow start, as they have allowed 7.4 points per game in the first quarter – most in the National Football League. What Baltimore has to do is to get its attack untracked. Head coach John Harbaugh fired Marc Trestman and replaced him with offensive coordinator Marty Mournhimweg, but they have not gotten the results; the “bounce” if you will, out of that move. Terrance West has been a non-factor, with only 31 rushing yards over the last two games. Under the new leadership, the offense has produced only 2.2 yards per carry. This is not going to be the formula that leads the Ravens to the playoffs.
