The Browns almost didn’t show up last Sunday, as they were out gained 422-222 by the Dallas Cowboys. They have not gotten awful play out of rookie Cody Kessler at quarterback. Actually, what did anyone expect? The raw strength of his arm was questioned by NFL scouts, and he has not magically acquired the ability to go deep down the field. But you must admit that he has taken care of the ball pretty well, as he has been intercepted only once all year. Kessler did not start the first time the Browns and Ravens met; in that game, Josh McCown injured his shoulder, and Kessler took over the next week.

The Ravens started out of the gate quickly, as they had a healthy team. But injuries started to affect what they were able to do on the field. They had lost four consecutive games until coming back to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 21-14 last week. But they were hardly a well-oiled machine on the offensive end; they had only 274 total yards on the day, and 95 of them came on one pass play, from Joe Flacco to Mike Wallace.

In the first encounter, the Browns raced out to a 20-0 lead, and at that point Cleveland fans were probably very encouraged that McCown had gotten the starting assignment in place of Robert Griffin, who had injured his shoulder in the opener, a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. But when they lined up for the extra point after scoring their third touchdown in the first quarter, they had it blocked, and Baltimore ran it back for a two-point tally. Cleveland never scored another point again as the Ravens went on to a 25-20 victory. In the Browns are now at 0-9.

They have not helped themselves with all of their mental mistakes either; center Cameron Erving, who has been plagued by injuries, got himself ejected from the game early in the first quarter against Dallas. At that point, the offensive line got disrupted, at least in the words of left tackle Joe Thomas. Kessler threw for 203 yards, which was not nearly enough.
