NFL ODDS & PREVIEW – CHICAGO BEARS AT KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (10/11) | OSB

By Charles Jay

The Chicago Bears turned to their starting quarterback again last week, almost out of absolute necessity, and got some results out of it. Now they will try to get closer to the .500 mark as they take their show on the road to face the Kansas City Chiefs in an inter-conference matchup that is slated to get underway at 1 PM ET on Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium. And guess what? Even after the opening kickoff, BetAnySports patrons will have the opportunity to place their wagers on the side, total and various props, while the action is in progress, through the facilities of Live Betting Extra.

Both of these teams are 1-3, both straight-up and against the football pointspread. Clearly that is not the way the Chiefs envisioned it, but let’s face it – having to play Denver, Green Bay and Cincinnati in consecutive weeks is like traveling through a minefield. They are having some problems punching the ball into the end zone, but the hope is that the Bears’ defense might provide some relief.

Chicago saw quarterback Jay Cutler go down with an injury , which required Jimmy Clausen to come in and replace him. But that was a disaster, as the team got shut out 26-0 in Seattle. So apparently the decision was made that if Cutler would move an inch with his bad hamstring, he was going to play against Oakland. And he did, putting it in the air 43 times for 281 yards, and he engineered drives that resulted in the winning points.

In the NFL odds that have been posted on this game by the folks at BetAnySports, the Chiefs are a sizable favorite:

Kansas City Chiefs -8.5
Chicago Bears +8.5

Over 45 points -110
Under 45 points -110

The Chiefs got some good numbers last week, even in losing 36-21 to the Bengals. Alex Smith had 386 yards through the air, and Jeremy Maclin was on the receiving end for 145 of them. Smith has even thrown a TD pass to a wide receiver this season (Maclin), and that is progress.

But actually, the Bears’ defense had a very strong outing in the 22-20 win over the Raiders, as they permitted only 243 total yards. Is that an aberration, or is Vic Fangio’s 3-4 alignment starting to take hold? NFL bettors recall that Jared Allen was just traded, because he had a difficult time adjusting himself to life as a linebacker, and that is a sign that Chicago is resigned to keeping those who can fit in comfortably.

For those BetAnySports patrons who want to point out a major defense between the Chiefs’ defensive unit between 2014 and 2015, it is that they simply have gone from one extreme to another when defending themselves in the red zone. Last year they were the best in the league at it, but over the first four games they have allowed opposing teams to score touchdowns 81.2% of the time when they get inside the 20, and that is worst in the NFL.

Football bettors who were wondering about the status of Chicago wide receiver Alshon Jeffery should know that he missed practice on Friday, and is listed as questionable at best with a strain of his hamstring.
