The odds have been released from BetOnline for the 2021 NFL Coach of the year. The previous year, in 2020, Head Coach Kevin Stefanski of the Cleveland Browns won. Stefanski led the Browns to their first winning season since 2007 and their first playoff appearance since 2002. If there was a comeback team of the year award, the Browns could’ve won that title too.
This year there are a different group of coaches with the best chances, however, they might not be the best choice. A year like Stefanski had is one way to win the title of Coach of the Year but it’s not the only way. Let’s take a look at some of the candidates and make give you our prediction on who will win.
First-Year Head Coach, Brandon Staley Has The Best Odds To Win The Award.
This is rather strange, Brandon Staley, a first-year coach has the best odds to win the award at +1300. The reason for this we can only imagine is because of his track record as a defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams.
NFL Coach of the Year 2021, is a high honor, but does Staley have what it takes to win? He’s inheriting a solid team, with a young quarterback who won the Rookie of the Year award. However, he has no track record yet as a head coach and a therefore a bad pick to make to win the award.
A Better Option, Brian Flores Of The Miami Dolphins
You could argue that Brian Flores should’ve won the 2020 NFL Coach of the Year Award. He turned around a team that went 5-11 in 2019 to 10-6 in 2020. BetOnline has his odds to win the award at +1400, narrowly behind Brandon Staley. Flores is now in year three with the Dolphins, who are trending upwards.
The only competition they have in their division right now is the Buffalo Bills, who went 13-3 in 2020. As far as Flores goes, he’s a much better option to take as 2021 Coach of the Year over Brandon Staley. He’s actually familiar with his team, and won’t need an entire season to iron out details as Staley will.
Sean McDermott, The Best Bang For Your Buck
As it stands BetOnline has Sean Mcdermott’s odds at +1700. That means all you would need is to bet $100, to win $1700 plus your original wager. This is an amazing deal considering who you’d be placing your bets on. McDermott, Head Coach of the Buffalo Bills has an incredible track record and nearly led his team to the Super Bowl in 2020.
Had it not been for the Chiefs, the Bills would’ve faced the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Honestly, it would’ve been a much tougher matchup for Tom Brady due to the Bills pass rush. Take this into account when placing a pick on Coach of the Year. McDermott knows what it takes to lead his team deep into the playoffs and they’re knocking on the door of the Super Bowl right now.
OSB Official Pick: Sean McDermott +1700 (at BetOnline)
